  • fiat uno 'screaming' in gears 1-3 15 Aug 2003 (Forum)
I'm an engine newbie so I have no idea what I'm looking for, although I have noticed upon inspection of the engine compartment that the small pipe that leads from the air filter to the exhaust (i think) is not correctly secured - it's obvious there's an imperial clip missing, and the top of the pipe doesn't properly surround the lip of the whole on the bottom of the air filter housing.
  • throttle position sensor voltage. 5 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Voltage across the battery, and at the other sensors seems normal. The ECU has been tested OK and the car has had new plugs, leads, lambda sensor and secondhand coil. The Cat has also been recently replaced).
  • "Piston, Diaphragm, Vacuum Thingie" 31 Jul 2003 (Forum)
David W, maybe Citroen do a similar thing with quantities of rubber balls and green oil..Give me back my Viva. On the previous two occasions a dose of STP diesel treatment seems to have sorted them out, leading to my suspicion of a jammed injector. My diesel man cannot work this out. Help! Rob
  • Radiator losing water 19 May 2003 (Forum)
When I opened it to check, I noticed the radiator was really really low on water, but there are no visible signs of leaking. My grandfather tightened up all the hoses/leads etc around the radiator, and there's no visible puddles of water around the car when it's stationary. It only seems to lose a lot of water when I'm driving, so I have to continually top it up. I have no idea what the problem is, can anyone help?
  • Ford head unit connector pinout 2 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Hi I am trying to install a old style (standard size) Ford 2006 RDS head unit into the old 89 polo, as it's original head unit has died, and as the rest of the car is not far behind I do not want to spend money on a new head unit. I have the original ford connectors > flying leads and know that when viewed from the back the connecteor on the right is for the speakers. The connector on the left has pin numbers marked on the plug such that Pin 1 > Red wire (top of connector) Pin 2 > Brown wire Pin 3 > Yellow wire Pin 4 > yellow / grey pin 5 > N/C pin 6 > heavy gauge brown pin 7 > N/C Does anybody know what the pinout of this connector is?
  • Rover 200 Steering - calling Dave Lacey 2 Jan 2003 (Forum)
I also have a couple of other questions related to this car: 1. It has a water leak in the boot. I am lead to believe that this is a common problem with this model but I don't know of anyone having cured it. Do you know whether it can be fixed and if so how? 2. I would like to fit a Rover roof rack to it but it appears I need to cut the door seal retainers in order to do so - is this correct and if so is it likely to cause more water leaks?
  • Vectra 2.0l SRI 12 Dec 2002 (Forum)
The car has had the following components fitted which I have checked with the companies that these should not be making this problem. He has had a superchip, a K & N panel air filter and some UHT leads fitted. If anyone can help with this it would be much appreciated.
  • Tyre fitter problems 4 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I went to talk to the owner (to let him know what a bad job his workers had done) who refused to talk about anything else apart from how it would have been impossible to buckle the wheel. I said I know that but it was a coincidence that the buckle apears exactly where the old lead was. Now, I have 2 questions: (1) Is there any chance that HJ can get a register of BAD garages? (2) Can an alloy wheel have a buckle taken out? Also would thank KWIK-FIT (yes I did say KWIK-FIT) in Bangor for sorting everything out on Sunday morning.

  • Best oil for 1.8 K-series 9 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Having read so many HJ columns and the FAQ, I really want to stick the fully-synth in so hopefully the lump will last, BUT a mechanic mate of mine who works at the local Rover dealer says not to use fully synth on these K-series engines, because it is too thin! Aparently it can lead to (or exasperate?) some of the problems 'occasionally' experienced by these engines. Now im at a loss which to choose! Help please...
  • Running in a new yaris 1 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I know that cars do need to be driven quite hard in the last stages of the run-in to fully loosen the engine up, but what sort of miles should we have on the clock before putting on the lead-lined right boot ? Finally, the first service is scheduled for 10,000 miles - is this correct ? Surely the car should be taken back for an oil change sooner that this to get rid of the inevitable swarf that will be created by running it in ?
  • Oil loss 21 Nov 2001 (Forum)
A hard 200 mile drive the other day didn't cause any more oil loss than in daily driving. All I can think of is that it seems to be since i had the plugs and leads replaced a week or so ago. Is this just a coincedence??? HELP!
  • Ford Focus Saloon - Ford Focus TDCI 55 Plate Rain/Electrical issue? 15 Feb 2014 (Forum)
I figure that if there is a drain on the battery it should show a slightly higher reading when the positive lead is disconnected so I take that lead off and test the battery. 12.7 volts, perfectly full battery, that's not right.... Reconnect the positive lead and still at 12.7 volts. The battery was never dead instead it had an 8 volt drain on it somewhere which was cleared after disconnecting it for 5 seconds.
  • Kia Sorento - Kia Sorrento loosing coolant 26 Jun 2023 (Forum)
Noticed coolant around radiator cap then saw that the overflow tube from the radiator cap had snapped and tube leading back to reservoir dangling. I assume garage had damaged it when replacing radiator and took it back. Dealer repaired the overflow pipe but said they didn't damage it and they believe head gasket is leaking pressure into cooling system and it has blown it off.
  • Volvo V90 - Repairs on new (to me) car 23 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Dealer I bought from said if I got them a price they’d “see what they can do” about paying for it... Volvo main dealer identified problem as water ingress leading to it shorting out. New unit required: £430 fitted. The seller is now refusing to pay for it, only offering to cover the £180 it would cost for a USED unit, fitted by them, a 2.5 hour drive each way.
  • GDI Engines - Ford 15 Dec 2020 (Forum)
As opposed to more traditional engines, fuel is injected directly into the cylinder, hence the valves aren't cleaned by the fuel. This leads to the seal of the valve being compromised, then lack of performance, rough idling, etc. Two questions of forum members: 1. Your opinion of the engine & even better if you own one?
  • hearing problems-headphones? 7 Sep 2020 (Forum)
Ideally I would like some headphones I could use that would not cut the sound off to the room, preferably wireless ones to avoid trailing leads. Any advice on availability or makes and models would be appreciated as I am sure someone on the forum has encountered this problem previously. Thank you all. Cheers Concrete
  • Suzuki Baleno - Diminution in value after paint job 16 Mar 2020 (Forum)
My question is this.  However good a paint job is, does the fact that it's been done lead to a reduction in the car's value?  If so, by what sort of amount?  (The car's a 2016, value c. £7k). Thanks in advance.
  • Rover 400 - Rover 414i 1999 starting issue 1 Feb 2019 (Forum)
I drove for about an hour no issues, I parked up for 10 mins, drove for another hour no issues, parked up for half hour and then drove 2 mins around the corner, went back to the car 20 mins later and nothing, just a click....tried bumping car and nothing, tried jump leads, nothing, all lights were on and fine, moved car to safe area and decided to see if I could find a solution, went back to car after a few hours and after a click, a second of struggling it started and drove me home fine, checked it this morning and slight struggle(maybe due to cold weather) it started and has had no problems since....only thing I noticed was water tank seemed to have gone low but can see no leaks anywhere, all temps were fine but could something have over heated causing the issue?
