Hybrids and Starting Trouble 16 May 2020 (Forum)
It flashed up a warning that battery was low and that I should charge it up by driving. -
Renault Megane Scenic 06 - 3 starter motors in 3 years 9 Mar 2016 (Forum)
I have had 3 in the last three years. The last two times prior to it going we had a dash error STOP BATTERY LOW but when checked it wasn't. When we stopped the car and started again the error went and we had a new battery. So we thought it was just one of those things. Then a few months after the car wouldn't start. -

Audi A4 Avant 2004 1.9TDI - Diisplay Errors: Date, Time & Outside Temp 9 Mar 2014 (Forum)
[endif]--> Car wasn’t used for 6 weeks – engine run at 2,000 rpm every 4-5 days to keep battery charged, except one period where it had to be left for 8 days. Car always started, battery sometimes sluggish, but not excessively so (it's never been a great battery). After the 6 week period, noticed the clock had lost time, and the following day, the date had reset to 13/8/2003 (presumably when the electronics were manufactured), time was 00.00 and the outside temperature was always low – varying between -5 degrees and 3 degrees. -
Ford Transit 2.5 Diesel - Has my transit lost its memory 19 Jul 2013 (Forum)
My 1996 2.5 diesel transit won’t start after removing the battery 6 months ago and putting the van in storage, I have checked all the obvious things battery fuses etc, but the problem persists, I suspect it is something to do with the ford pats immobilizer as I get nothing other than a click from the ignition relay when I turn the key, and the warning light comes on the dashboard, there are no other noises, and I can’t hear the fuel pump whirring like it usually does, is it possible for the immobilizer to lose the code from its memory due to the battery being removed for a long time I have tried starting it with the red master key but it’s still the same. -
1995 toyota celica convertible 2.0GT Auto - Celica Charge and Catalyst lights suddenly on 12 Jul 2012 (Forum)
Went to collect it they said two warning lights had come on when they started it up to drive it into the MOT centre from the car-park. There is the charge (battery symbol) and also "toaster" style symbol (catalyst ??) both on at once. Tried disconnecting/reconnecting the battery to clear ECU but they remain. Tried disconnecting battery with engine running and it dies - does this mean the alternator is dead ? -
Electric cars 13 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Car's dead, and you can't just walk to the garage to get a can of fuel, you've got to wait, or have lots of extra batteries for it. The author doesn't quote the range; he only says that with extra batteries and motors it could do 250 miles on one charge. I do over 75 miles a day so it'd be absurd for me to buy a car like this to have it conk out on me halfway home. -
renaut grande espace - renaut espace electrical nightmare 26 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Problem was master cylinder leaking whcih they fixed. They then said once fixed car wouldn't start. changed the battery still didn;t work. Got autoelectricain in who said may be started motor - replaced. Next it was ECU(?) and this was replaced (well over £1000). IN the middle of all this when we were getting upset they admitted that they drained the battery when trying to bring the car into the garage as I left it parked outside when I dropped it. they couldn't get it to move and ended up draining battery (I assuem) na dhad to push it into garage. Then it wouldnt start. -
Can I install a new cigarette lighter socket in my Peugeot 306? 7 Aug 2010 (Ask HJ)
My Peugeot 306's cigarette lighter does not work. All the fuses are okay as the dashboard lights and the cigarette light works, and these are all on the... -
Toyota Previa 2.4i 16v 2001 - Toyota Previa No Spark from Coil 2 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I was advised to get hold of a new coil and No. 1 HT lead, which I duly did and also I added a new battery. I fitted the battery first and then found that I couldn't get the car to start at all. Believing that the new power in the battery has possibly finished off the coil, I replaced the coil and HT lead and find that it still wont start. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.6 Lumpy running then EML. 8 Oct 2009 (Forum)
With a door open the interior light was flickering, very bright at times, buzzing heard from fuse panel in glove box (no door open chime with lights on). I checked the battery voltage, 14.85V, engine running. The alternator was hot, after only a 5 mile journey. This morning I've checked battery OC voltage 12.5V and SG, cells 1-5 12.70, 6 12.50 (still the orignal battery). -
Renault Clio II (2001 - 2007) - 01 1.2 Starting Problem. Immobiliser? 22 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Hi, My Renault Clio has rather suddenly decided to stop working and it seems to be or I guess it to be an immobiliser problem. At first I thought it was because it was winter it just didn't want to know and needed a new battery as it turns over and then gives up after a couple of seconds. So I bought a new battery and it did seem to work, well for about 2 days and now I'm back where I was (guess I was just lucky). I've also tried a new battery in both of my plip keys to try and make sure the signal is working properly and it does open and lock my doors so I guess the fault isn't at the plip key end, rather the receiver? -
Mazda MX5 (1989 - 1998) - 1989 1.6 How to remove the alarm/immobiliser? 14 Aug 2008 (Forum)
It is an aftermarket item rather than an original fitment judging by the wiring This device seems to have failed leading to us not being able to start the car at all, even if we just reconnect the battery the alarm goes off. What happened was that the alarm went off and would not respond to the fob, so I disconnected the battery to shut the thing up. Now if I reconnect the battery the alarm sounds So currently the vehicle is on our drive with the multiplug disconnected from the alarm/immobiliser module, a dead, unusable car. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.8 Electrics gone haywire 19 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Lights on dashboard very faded. Luckily fully covered by Green Flag and they came out. Hooked up battery booster and engine started straight away however when he asked me to check lights and put heater on full blast as soon as turned lights on the engine cut out. His diagnosis was probably new battery needed or worst still a new alternator. -
Peugeot 306 - dead and now keys faulty 27 May 2007 (Forum)
After the terrible rain at the weekend I tried to turn it over on Monday - dead! My neighbour kindly offered to charge the battery which he did but explained it wasn't holding the charge very well. We tried it again but nothing. We've been and bought a new battery and tried again and this happens: Turn engine on, dash lights come on, immobiliser activates and radio comes on. -
Possible starter motor problem:Volvo S40 28 Aug 2005 (Forum)
went to switch my car on once filling up 'air in my tyres and the car wasnt starting. all of the lights in the the dashboard were lighting up as usual and when turning the ignition, there was a ticking sound but no effort of the enging rolling over. now, i assumed that the battery was at fault and even tried push starting the car, but had no joy with this. i am right in thinking that if there was a bad battery, the car should start when push starting it. i was just about to jumpstart the car, and thought id try starting it before i jumped it, and the car started as normal, with no struggle at all. -
Citreon AX 1.4 diesel - won't start 15 Oct 2004 (Forum)
When the engine does turn over the car starts first time you don't have to turn the engine over for any lenght of time before it fires. Its had a new starter motor (needed according to the AA), battery (the autoelectrian's advice)and alternator (garage's advice)and I've still got the same problem. The above people are saying its a faulty new starter motor, faulty new battery (I haven't bothered taking back to the garage). -
K11 micra: flooded engine or flat batt'y 8 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Get a new sensor fitted or if flooding reoccurs, just crank like hell at the risk of flattening the battery? Thanks Mike -
Polo Alarm Problems 27 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Stuck now with car alarm going off in res. area on a Saturday night. Disconnected battery, left it over night! Came back to it in the morning, reconnected battery, all works fine! Same thing though happend last night - press the fob, nothing (and this was the other fob now) One thing that was suggested was to hold the button for 20sec to allow the fob and car 'see' each other again. -
VW Golf 1.9 130bhp - Rough Start 29 Jan 2024 (Forum)
On my 1.9 tdi 130bhp mk4 golf i recently purchased its got a problem starting warm or cold the issue is there It doesnt cut out when driving, drives and runs perfect, no smoke The key has to be held on a few seconds extra to start than normal, sometimes this then puts the EML and flashing glow plug light on the dash 'emissions workshop' fault code says p0321 engine speed sensor intermittent Have changed the crankshaft sensor but no different tested a battery from another car that is working good, again no different 096 is the battery size, could this be upgraded to a bigger one? Or what else could I check?
