Alfa Romeo Tonale gets facelift and price cut

  • Revised looks and improved driving dynamics
  • Choice of hybrid or plug-in hybrid power
  • New colour and trim options
  • Prices start at £37,665

Alfa Romeo has given its Tonale small SUV a refresh for 2026, with design tweaks and new colour options. There's also a price drop compared to the outgoing model.

First introduced in 2022, the Tonale is a small SUV with a premium edge, making it a rival for cars like the Audi Q3, the BMW X1, the Volvo XC40 and more.

For 2026, the Tonale has a refreshed look inside and out, with new colour options, and a revised trim line-up with the former entry-level Sport model ditched from the range.

Despite the drop in price, the 2026 Tonale is well specced, with matrix LED headlights as standard across the range, either side of the redesigned grille, which Alfa calls the Scudetto. It rides on 17-inch alloy wheels in an updated design as standard, while higher-spec models get 18-inch, 19-inch or 20-inch units. There's awider track than before, too.

The Tonale is available in eight paint colours – three new metallic shades of Brera Red, Monza Green and Giallo Ocra, as well as Montreal Green, Vesuvio Grey and Misano Blue, and two solid colours, Alfa Black and Alfa White.

Inside, there's a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a 10.25 digital driver display behind the steering wheel. The centre console has been revised with a rotary dial for selecting the drive mode, instead of the lever in the outgoing model.

2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale engines, performance and fuel economy

The Tonale Ibride comes with a 175PS 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, sending power through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. That means a 0-62mph time of 8.5 seconds and an official fuel economy of up to 49.6mpg.

The Tonale Plug-In Ibrida is more powerful, with 270PS from its 1.3-litre engine and electric motor, which uses a 15.5kWh battery and drives all four wheels. The 0-62mph drops to 6.6 seconds. Officially, it'll give you up to 217.3mpg, but such measurements are largely meaningless as real-world fuel economy depends how often you charge your battery and rely on electric power.

There are four versions of the new Tonale – base, Ti, Sport Speciale and Veloce.

The base Tonale comes with full LED matrix headlights and taillights and 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. Inside, the seats are upholstered in black fabric and Scuba synthetic leather with contrasting stitching. Adaptive cruise control, dual-zone climate control and a rear-view camera are standard.

Upgrade to the Ti model and you'll find gloss black window frames on the outside, dark 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and a chrome Ti badge. Inside, there are leather seats in red or black with electric adjustment, heating, ventilation and lumbar support. A heated steering wheel is included and there are aluminium paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. The infotainment gets satellite navigation included, too.

The Veloce trim is the top of the regular range, with 19-inch wheels, red Brembo brake calipers and twin chrome tailpipes on the plug-in version. Upgraded dual-valve electronic suspension (DSV) is included for improved handling.

The Sport Speciale is a launch edition to celebrate the Tonale's overhaul. It rides on 20-inch alloy wheels and has a gloss black bodykit with silver accents, as well as gloss black Brembo brakes. Inside, there are black and white Alcantara seats with white stitching.

How can I look after my car to prolong its life?

Having previously owned two Alfa 159s I am currently the proud owner of a 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia diesel 2.2 180 Super. I purchased it new I have now completed 90k totally trouble free miles and I can honestly say it’s the best car I have ever owned. I would like to keep it forever. What do I need to look out for as the vehicle gets older and as the mileage adds up?
If you plan to keep the car long term then regular maintenance is the most important factor. You may wish to consider increasing the frequency of oil changes to ensure the oil is providing the best possible protection, and having the timing belt replaced if you have not done so already. A car of this age should not be experiencing corrosion issues but you may want to prevent future problems by using a protectant on the underside such as Waxoyl or Lanoguard, and using paint protectant such as a wax or ceramic coating and covering the car in winter will help to retain the paint quality.
