Hyundai's Staria Electric MPV set to come to the UK

  • New electric MPV available with up to 9 seats
  • 800-volt architecture means fast charging
  • 249-mile expected range
  • Towing capacity of up to 2000kg

This is Hyundai's new flagship electric MPV, the Staria Electric. It's expected to come to the UK after making its debut in South Korea and Europe by the summer.

Available in seven- and nine-seat configurations, the Hyundai Staria Electric is designed for families as much as it is for executive travel firms, offering eye-catching looks and lots of interior space, as well as tech and comfort.

The Staria Electric shares its platform with the forthcoming Hyundai ST1 van, but will have a larger 84kWh battery with an expected battery range of up to 249 miles. Modern 800-volt architecture should give it fast charging. It will rival the likes of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz, the Kia PV5, and the Mercedes-Benz VLE.

There's no firm release date for the Hyundai Staria Electric yet and it's not been officially confirmed for sales here. However, we know it will go on sale in South Korea and Europe in the first half of this year. It seems very likely that UK sales will follow soon afterwards.

As a full MPV, the Staria Electric is unsurprisingly boxy in shape, but it's decidedly modern with its full-width LED lightbar and smoothed front end.

It's based on the existing hybrid-powered Staria that we don't get in the UK, which was given a facelift at the end of last year. There are eight colours to choose from and 17-inch alloy wheels across the range.

It's big, at 5255mm long and 1995mm wide, with a height of 1990mm and a 3275mm wheelbase. The glazing is vast to improve interior light and wide sliding doors on both sides (electric on higher-spec models) should make getting in and out a breeze.

The rear tailgate is very big and there's 435 litres of boot space behind the third row of seats in the seven-seat Luxury model, or 1303 litres in the nine-seat, business-focused Wagon model. The seats can slide and fold to improve cargo space.

The interior is designed to be lounge-like, with a flat floor and lots of headroom. Options will include heated and ventilated seats. The infotainment duties are carried by dual 12.3-inch displays – one for the driver and one in the centre – with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are 100W USB charging ports and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality to let you power small appliances using a three-pin plug.

Power comes from an 84kWh battery that gives an expected range of up to 249 miles, although that hasn't been officially ratified yet. The single electric motor produces 218PS and drives the front wheels.

DC charging should be quick, with an 10% to 80% battery recharge taking just 20 minutes with a suitable charger. The Staria Electric also supports up to 11kW AC charging.

We don't have full performance stats yet, but we do know that it can tow up to 2000kg, which is impressive for a car of this type.
