The Fiesta is back! New electric small Ford promised by 2028
- Renault and Ford join forces to share Renault's Ampere electric car platform
- First of two new small Ford EVs due early 2028
- Fiesta name could return
Renault and Ford have announced a new partnership that will see two new small electric Fords built using Renault's Ampere electric car platform. The deal could see the Ford Fiesta name return to British streets, five years after it was withdrawn from production.
The new deal is described as a strategic partnership and will see Ford develop two new cars, using the same platform as the Renault 4 and Renault 5, with the first due in showroom early in 2028. The two companies also plan to jointly develop new Renault and Ford-branded vans.
Unlike the new Nissan Micra, which is virtually identical to the Renault 5, the new Ford Fiesta, as we expect it to be called, will be Ford-developed and designed, but share the Renault platform and be built at Renault's ElectriCity factory in France.
The second model is likely to be a small electric SUV sitting below the Ford Puma Gen-E. Could we see the Ford Ka name brought back for that?
"The strategic partnership with Renault Group marks an important step for Ford and supports our strategy to build a highly efficient and fit-for-the future business in Europe," says Jim Farley, Ford's president and CEO.
"We will combine Renault Group’s industrial scale and EV assets with Ford’s iconic design and driving dynamics to create vehicles that are fun, capable, and distinctly Ford in spirit."
