Volvo updates EX90 with faster charging and safety upgrades

  • Big SUV moves to 800V architecture
  • Promises 155 miles of range in 10 minutes
  • More power
  • Upgraded safety systems

Volvo has announced upgrades to its EX90 electric SUV, with a new electrical system and an improved computer processor that allows it to run more advanced safety features.

The electrical system in the EX90 is now an 800-volt system, replacing the old 400-volt system, which allows a boost in horsepower (although Volvo hasn't said by how much) and the possible rate of battery charge. Volvo says that with a suitable fast charger you'll be able to top of the battery with 155 miles of range in just 10 minutes.

On top of that, the arrival of the Nvidia Drive AGX Orin processor, as used in the ES90 and replacing the previous Nvidia Xavier chip, gives the car extra capability. New features include connected safety alerts for things like hazards, slippery roads and accidents up ahead, and automatic emergency e-call functionality with the car's Emergency Stop Assist system.

The upgrades will be fitted to new EX90s, but existing owners will also be able to get their cars upgraded by arranging a visit to a Volvo workshop.

Other new features available on the latest Volvo EX90 include an electrochromic panoramic roof (as seen on the ES90) that lets you adjust the glass transparency at the touch of a button. It also gets an improved automatic emegrency steering function that works in darkness, and Park Pilot assist for parallel parking.

What very comfy, quiet motorway cruiser do you suggest?

Due to a chronic health condition I am going to have to trade in my BMW 520d M Sport as the seat is too low and the ride is too firm for me these days. With a budget of £20k, can you recommend any cars that I can go and test drive that will give me comfort, a decent drivers seat height for getting in and out, but still has some performance? I will use the car to drive to France as well as to North Norfolk, so would like something quiet and very comfortable.
If you are considering another saloon then we would suggest the Volvo S90 or Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but if you need something taller for easy access we would suggest the Volvo XC90. Specification is important, so we would advise looking for versions with non-sport suspension, so avoid AMG Line specifications in Mercedes and R-Design in Volvo.
