Skoda Octavia vRS iV revealed with plug-in hybrid power

Skoda has revealed a hot vRS version of its new Octavia - with a plug-in powertrain offering 245PS and an electric range of 37 miles.

The plug-in hybrid Octavia combines a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine with an 85kW electric motor and six-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Hot petrol and diesel models are expected at a later date - meaning the Octavia vRS range will mirror the new Volkswagen Golf GTE, GTI and GTD range.

With instant torque available from the start, the Octavia vRS iV can sprint to 62mph in 7.3 seconds, topping out at 140mph.

A 13kWh battery provides an all-electric range of up to 37 miles, while official fuel economy figures are yet to be announced. Skoda says it'll emit approximately 30g/km according to WLTP tests, making it a tempting choice for company car drivers.

Visual highlights of the Octavia vRS iV include bespoke LED fog lights, black 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inch alloys will also be offered) and a black rear spoiler on saloon models (body-coloured on the estate).

The interior features black fabric sports seats and an Alcantara-covered dashboard. There are vRS logos dotted around the cabin, along with decorative stripes and contrasting stitching. The vRS also gets aluminium pedals.

Along with the vRS model, Skoda has also announced two mild-hybrid versions of the popular 1.0- and 1.5-litre petrol engines. Available in the new Octavia, the eTec engines feature a 48V belt-driven starter motor and 48V battery to capture and store energy usually lost under deceleration. This can provide a torque boost of up to 50Nm and can also be used to let the car coast without engine power for short periods.

The new Skoda Octavia models were intended to be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show - which was cancelled due to coronavirus fears.

UK prices and specifications will be announced ahead of the new Octavia vRS iV going on sale later this year.
