Audi launches 2.0-litre 40 TDI engine for A6 and A7
The Audi A6 and A7 are now available with a four-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel engine badged the 40 TDI.
Audi dealers are now taking orders for the new engine, which starts at £38,640 in the A6 and £47,140 in the A7. It's the first time a four-cylinder engine has been used in an A7, with economy being the main advantage - combined fuel consumption is rated at 60.1mpg in the A7, slightly short of the A6 saloon's 62.8mpg.
The new A6 saloon 40 TDI hits 62mph in 8.1 seconds (rising to 8.3 seconds for both the Avant and A7 Sportback) and can reach a top speed of 152mph (A6 Avant 40 TDI: 149mph, A7 Sportback: 152mph). A seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission is fitted as standard.
A mild-hybrid system contributes to this economy, as per the bigger engines in the A6 and A7 ranges. This allows the engine to coast at idling speed when the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator pedal at between 34mph and 99mph.
Buyers can combine the new engine with Sport or S-Line trim levels, which both bring with them the same equipment levels as the six-cylinder engines. A total of 39 driver assistance features are available, split into three packages: parking (set to be introduced in 2019), city assist and tour. The latter includes adaptive cruise assist, which can accelerate, brake and keen the car in a marked lane.
In the A6 and A7 S line (starting at £42,000 and 50,040 respectively), the standard seats are replaced by sports seats upholstered in leather and Alcantara with S embossing. Other S line highlights include a perforated leather finish for the sports steering wheel as well as stainless steel pedals.
On the outside, the A6 Sport features 18-inch alloy wheels and LED front and rear lights, while the S line adds sports suspension and 19-inch alloys. Adaptive Matrix LED healights and dynamic rear indicators are also standard on the S line.
The A7 Sport features 19-inch alloys as standard, while the S line gains HD Matrix LED healight with dynamic front and rear indicators as well as 20-inch wheels.
Deliveries of the Audi A6 40 TDI will begin in September, with the A7 following in November.
