Jaguar launches 2018 XJ range with 186mph super saloon

Published 24 July 2017

Jaguar has updated the XJ range for 2018, with improved safety kit and more advanced infotainment. The British-built luxury saloon line-up will be topped by an all-new XJR, with 575PS and a top speed of 186mph.

The new Jaguar XJ start at £59,995 for the 300PS 3.0-litre V6 diesel and rise to £101,370 for the 575PS 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol. A slightly less bonkers 340PS 3.0-litre V6 petrol will cost £75,215. Official fuel and CO2 figures are yet to be confirmed, but the V6 diesel will be the most-efficient with economy ratings in the mid-40s.

An automatic ZF transmission will be fitted as standard to all cars, delivering power to the rear wheels via an eight-speed ‘box. Jaguar claims that handling has been improved across the board, thanks to a new electric power-assisted steering system, with finer controls and high levels of feedback.

As part of the update, all XJ models will get automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist as standard, while a driver condition monitor will tell the driver to take a break if it thinks the vehicle's handling is being impaired due to tiredness. As before, adaptive cruise control, reverse traffic detection and semi-automated bay- and parallel-parking will be standard across the range.

Inside, the XJ gets improved infotainment, with a new 10-inch central touchscreen providing higher resolution and faster screen changes than the old unit. The latest Touch Pro infotainment system now has 4G Wi-Fi, allowing occupants to stay online on the move with as many as eight devices.

In the back, buyers will be able to specify a rear seat entertainment system. Comprising two 10.2-inch HD screens, which fold away when not in use, these displays offer a true 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. When digital TV is also specified, a different channel can be shown on each screen in the vehicle.

The 2018 XJ has been headlined by the 575PS XJR. The super saloon will be the halo model of the XJ range and be available with standard or a long wheelbase, with prices ranging from £93,710 to £101,370. Both versions will be capable of a top speed of 186mph, while 0-60mph will take 4.2 seconds.

Buyers will be able to choose between two bespoke exterior colour finishes for the XKR, created specially by the Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations team – Velocity Blue and Satin Corris Grey – while additional tailor-made exterior details include a rear spoiler, side sills, front bumper and lower air intakes featuring gloss black surrounds.
