Jeep Patriot (2007 – 2011) Review

Jeep Patriot (2007 – 2011) At A Glance

2/5

+Value for money. Plenty of kit. Decent drive on the road and very capable off it.

-4x4 looks might attract unwanted attention. Poor quality interior.

Insurance Groups are between 16–22
On average it achieves 91% of the official MPG figure

It's hard to find a real bargain on the forecourt these days, but this one is going to make a lot of customers - and dealers - very happy. The Patriot is a 4x4 with almost the same dimensions as the Ford C-Max but more off-road ability than all the far-eastern SUVs put together. The iconic styling means it could only come from one manufacturer, Jeep, but the surprise is the price-tag of just £15,995.

The Americans have spent the last few years being considered as an also-ran against the likes of Land Rover, particularly in light of the updated Freelander and Range Rover's success. Some of the more ambitious newcomers to this sector, like KIA, have been making serious headway, whereas Jeep has been stuck in a rut associated with poor emissions and over-powered American muscle under an expensive bonnet. But its off-road heritage is undisputed and it's just pulled a fast one in comparison to its siblings Dodge and Chrysler.

The Patriot is a 4-door SUV with build quality as a priority and a price-tag to make it better value for money than any other 4x4 in the same sector. It's 20 per cent less, like for like, model for model, than the equivalent RAV4 from Toyota, or CR-V from Honda.

Is the diagnostic check on my Jeep Patriot, as well as the repair work, covered by my dealer's three month warranty?

"I recently bought a used Jeep Patriot from a dealer and was given a three month basic warranty from them. It developed an oil leak so I called the garage to say this was happening, they said put it into a garage to find out what was wrong (I can't take it back to them, as they are too far away). My Local garage have diagnosed a small hole in the cap on my oil filter and have given me a quote to fix the work. I had to pay £61 for the diagnostics, is this, as well as the new filter cap, covered by the warranty?"
Basically the dealer himself is responsible for this for 6 months from the date he sold you the car. it doesn't matter whether his 'warranty' covers it or not, the dealer is liable and has to pay: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/

Advice on recall notification

"I have a Jeep Patriot 2011. Yesterday it started leaking coolant and the water pump was making a grinding noise. Dropped it off at my local mechanic to look at. The same day I get a call from the Jeep Dealer I bought it off to say I had not responded to a product recall regarding coolant hose leaks ! When I spoke to my mechanic he tells me its £600 + VAT to repair! I did not receive any recall/notification from the Dealer/Jeep previously, I checked with Jeep today they say its not a recall but a maintenance notification and was sent to first Registered keeper (which turns out was the dealer that sold it new) in July. Do you think I have a claim on Jeep or the Dealer for not notifying me ?"
If you have always had the car serviced and maintained by Jeep dealers, yes. If you have not had it serviced and maintained by Jeep dealers, no, simply because they would not know where the car was or who owned. The only time the DVLA database is used for recalls is for safety recalls by DVSA/VOSA. If this is a diesel then it has a VW 2.0 TDI engine that needs a new timing belt, timing belt tensioner and waterpump every 4 years anyway.

My lock's frozen!

"I can't open driver's door in frosty conditions on my Jeep Patriot. There is no key access on driver's door. All buttons pop up, including driver's door, but neither the ouside handle nor the inside one operates until the temperature rises. I've taken the car to a Jeep Dealer, and it's costing me £290 to fix. Does this sound reasonable?"
Moisture ingress to the lock solenoid. It has frozen up.

Is there a smaller SUV which is suitable for city use?

"My husband bought possibly the ugliest car on the road - a Jeep Patriot. From October to February he drives a regular round trip of 150 miles each Saturday and may possibly experience a little snow now and then. The rest of the year it does little except take up a large amount of space where we live in London. Please can you suggest something with a touch more feminine appeal but keeping the high drive position and 4WD, or at least 4WD when needed, as well as room for three passengers and a dog or two, plus boots, coats etc. We do not, despite what he thinks, need a car the size of a tractor but just a medium-sized vehicle that I can drive around our quite narrow roads without frightening pedestrians or scraping parked cars. The Jeep must go, but the budget for its replacement can only unfortunately be about £12- £15,000 including trading in the horror."
I don't agree with you about the Jeep Patriot. It was not a terrible vehicle and is not over large. But a Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.4 D-4D, a Suzuki SX4 1.6i SZ5 4WD or a Suzuki Grand Vitara SWB will be smaller.
