Citroen C8 - 2.0Hdi poor fuel economy black smoke - bradspau

Hi all. I have a 2006 Citroen C8 2.0Hdi (NON-FAP) that has never returned fantastic fuel economy. It has always had an issue with black smoke on acceleration. I have blanked off the EGR valve at the inlet end and this has reduced the smoke slightly, although the fuel economy only ever returns 27-29mpg around town and on a long motorway journey never gets above 30mpg. I know black smoke is the sign of unburnt fuel, but can anyone recommend what I look at next in an effort to a) reduce the smoke and b) improve the MPG. I have also had the codes read and there is nothing logged to indicate a problem.

Thank you for your help/advice in advance

That is a poor fuel consumption for an Hdi, Parkers guide gives 40 mpg which means you should get 50+ on a long run, this engine will do 60+ in a C5 but its obviously working a lot harder in the C9 as emissions are up and yours is in a higher tax group.

Firstly is you engine running at the correct temperature as running cold will adversly affect the consumption. If its smoking you could have an injector problem but to give that consumption it would need to be smoking all the time.

Driving style will obviously affect the consumption but unless you drive very agressivly you should get at least 40mpg on a long journey.

Its not an auto is it? That will knock the economy

Honest John real MPG's gives a range of 33.0 mpg to 39.1 mpg which means you are below the lowest but if you drive constantly in city traffic and do have an injector issue that would help explain it.

As for getting 50+ on a long run afraid dream on. The official average is only about 40 mpg and no one gets that.

Suggest you get a diesel specialist to check it over.

Repaired one this week

customer complaint ,high fuel consumption, lack of power ,clouds of black smoke on high acceleration

plugged x431 into car came up with no real fault codes

further inspection found a split pipe that goes from air intake to turbo

pipe is 60mill in diameter and about 80 mill long ,follow air intake pipe down short pipe joins to plastic pipe that feeds turbo

at high revs the air that should be forced into the turbo was escaping through the split

so lots of unburnt fuel clouds of black smoke, low pressure to turbo resulting in a lack of power ,new pipe fitted ,power back , can hear turbo at 2500 revs, no black smoke

Srted

I can get 60 mpg + from my C5 8 valve Hdi and from my 406 with the same engine, driven gently that is, if yours has no FAP I would suspect you have the same engine and although the aerodynamics are poor compared to the C5 I would have thought you should easily have got 40+, unless yours is an auto or you drive in traffic all the time.

The previous poster could well have the answer.

Apologies, forgotton I had already posted - another senior moment.

@ Al AA - really useful post, thanks.

I wonder why there is a link pipe between the intake side of the turbo and the 'pressure' side? Unless there's some sort of control flap somewhere to stop the boost pressure leaking.

I presume the obvious diesel conditioner / injector cleaner has been used? If not, it can have a noticeable effect.
