Volkswagen golf gti mk5 - Part exchange my car tomorrow, accident tonight - ducatidanny
Hi

On Sunday I did a deal on a landrover discovery at Evans halshaw in Plymouth. I agreed a part ex value, signed all the paperwork....deal done.

However I am due to swap my golf for the discovery tomorrow morning, tonight I hit a rock and damaged the front of the car.

Where do I stand now? I am thinking of just going in and telling them the deal is off as its not worth the hassle, I'm assuming and quite rightly the dealer will now de value my car......but not wanting to have the mickey taken out of me?

Any ideas what my position is? And what there likely to try?

Best regards

Danny

How bad is the damage ? did you hit the rock at high speed ? was it a big rock ?

Can you just park it facing away from the showroom next to a wall so they don't see it, ( like you would with a Hire car )

Well the plastic grill is all cracked, bonnet has lifted slightly and paint scratches on the colour coded bumper.......oh and the number plate has fallen off........I pretty sure I won't get away with it, and not sure i could live with myself if I tried to hide it.

However that said the guy did say they had the landrover for a while so I'm assuming they are keen to shift it.

I don't think it's an expensive repair, and if I go in with the attitude that I'm not fussed about walking away (which is true).....then it will be hassle for them as its been taxed, all paperwork and finance paperwork has been done. It's just a case of collecting the car?

I think you will do better by being more positive, that you really want to go ahead with the deal, its only a few scratches and they can get it fixed for a fraction of what it will cost you.

My guess is they will reduce the value your car by the cost of making good - ask them to use trade prices as this is what it will cost them (I presume you don't want to involve your insurer?)

No I just want minimum hassle as my wife will be giving birth this week so minimal hassle is what we're after.......I'm considering just saying ill pay them an extra 200 quid which is what my excess would be.....and if they don't go for it just walk away and get it done at a later date. I guess there are more discovers out there.

My guess is they don't want me to walk away as they have had the car since September?

Presumably this sort of damage isn't covered on your insurance or your loss of NCB over several years isn't worth claiming.

You need to convince yourself, in advance, how much reduction you're prepared (can afford) to take and still go ahead with the deal - do the thinking now then the decision in the dealers is automatic, not emotive or driven by your heart.

I could claim on insurance I suppose but would the deal still go ahead tomorrow if I did that?

Just be up front and honest with them. You say you're prepared to take a hit or walk away from the deal, so you've plenty of room to manoeuvre.

I guess it'll cost you less than £100.
