Tyre ratings - Happy Blue!
I was having a quick look through a couple of the online tyre sales sites and note that they are now using the new EC ratings for noise, wet grip and rolling resistance. How reliable are these?

The tyres on my S-Max are rated as C for resistance, B for grip and 76dB. The other tyres available in my size all appear to be much quieter. How much difference will I notice inside the car?

How long is a piece of string?

The ratings are a good idea but, as is often the case, th execution leaves a lot to be desired.

Noise is measured externally. Tyres are tested under maximum load rating. A lot of the noise is caused by air being forced out of the sipes as the tyre deforms. So noise will depend on how heavily the tyre is loaded.
