BBC News report - only top of Porsche (they say) showing above floods but the wipers are still going. Impressive electrics there.

Clip also showed a highly visible, black number on white background, sign showing the depth of the water as 4 feet! Darwinian selection at work!

The water often shorts out all the switches, causing many electrical items to operate - typically the headlights !

Did anyone catch the guy driving the old Hyundai Coupe (East Anglian local news only?) who passed/smirked at the TV cameras before attempting to drive through/enter a ford(?) at a reasonably normal speed ... ... only to be seen 30-secs later bailing out through the passenger window (minus shoes & socks) and begin pushing it out the other end – funny!

Hi, after the wettest year on record with flooding every couple of week in various parts of the country I am wondering why some motorists still risk driving into flood water. Most modern cars have air intakes too low down to go into water of any significant depth(an exspesive mistake).

I wonder how many do not get paid out by their insurer as I believe insurerers won't pay if you drive into flood water.

I checked and found the intake on my i30 is just above the bonnet slam panel; I still don't risk water deeper than 4 inches though.

Some diesels have very low air intakes, don't know if this is true or why. I wrecked the engine of a Rover 218 in very shallow water, years ago. Insurer paid with out a quibble.
