Tackles common myths.

Another totally irrelevant and valueless article.

When will these papers realise that the majority of us don't drive Porche's, in truth you can get a house in our village with some change for the price of a Cayman.

The article would have had some value if the cars used were of the type we mortals can afford. It would have been even better if the vehicles used were available as both 2 and 4 wheel drive meaning the comparrison uses cars weighing pretty much the same which affects the way the climb hills and brake. 3 spring to mind immediately, the Ford Kuga, Kia Sportage and Hyundai ix35.

As I said its in a national paper so why should we expect them to realise we don't all drive supercars to work.

I do not follow your argument the article is about how good or not the fitting of winter tyres improves grip in snowy or icy conditions it is quite irrelevant as to what car they are fitted it could have been a Ford Consul and the improvement would have been as good.

As a matter of fact the running gear on the Porshe is the same as fitted to many VWs and Audis they are assembled in the same factory using most of the same parts.

OK, the VW Tuareg is related to the Porche Cayanne but what VW or Audi is related to the Cayman. The last VW that was rear engined and rear wheel drive was the original Beetle, is that what youa referring to.

Still say the test would have been more relevant if they had used the same car in FWD and 4WD versions, other mags have done it before.

All 4 wheel drive VWs,Skodas and Audis there are numerous models and sell in the thousands.

The article was about winter tyres not makes of car or have you down on Porsche or reporters in general.

The Porsche Cayenne is a VW Touareg underneath, so has a link with VW and Audi - Skoda don't currently produce a similar model.

The Porsche Cayman has no similarity with any current Skoda, VW or Audi but does with the original Beetle - the Cayman shares it's 4wd system with the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento - they all use the Borg Warner ITMe3 4wd system.

The Audi Q8 is identical, the syncro versions of all VAG use the same parts. But its all irrelevant the article was about winter tyres not makes of vehicles or do you not understand that

Tee Hee

I overtooks a Porsch Careera S on the roundabout at Coleraine on Tuesday evening.

I kept a straight face throughout.

You're the one arguing about makes/models - and VAG use TWO entirely different 4wd systems !!

Your in a dreamworld.

Winter tyres..great article - RT

Your in a dreamworld.

My dreamworld is full of reality.

VAG's (Audi) quattro longitudinal 4wd system is entirely different to VAG's (VW) synchro transverse 4wd system.

The marketing men blur the edges by calling all Audi 4wd as quattro even on the smaller models with transverse engines and calling all VW 4wd as synchro even on the larger models with longitudinal engines.

Perhaps you'd let me know the pros and cons of each, or just tell us which we should go for?

A two-wheel drive car on winter tyres is better than a four-wheel-drive car on summer tyres...

The above snippet from the article sums it up. How you find this irrelevant and valueless is amazing. It is more impressive that a rear wheel drive car is used as will perform worse than a front wheel drive car. The fact they have used Porsche is explained perfectly well in that they have a test centre.

P.S. You can pick up a decent second hand Porsche Cayenne or Boxster for £6k so they're easily within reach of us mere mortals. Just make sure it has winter tyres otherwise you'll be going nowhere in this snow.

Totally agree with the first line but its hardly fornt page news. Its been well known for years.

But who in their right minds would consider buying a Porche Boxter and sticking winter tyres on it. They are great cars but get serious, they are best saved for the summer. 99.9% of drivers use front wheel drive hatches, they should have tested those agianst a similar forur wheel drive car.

Take the Skoda Yeti, you can get FWD and 4WD in exactly the same model. That would ahve been relevant.
