Ford Focus Estate - speedo stops with performance lag - jpjeffery

Hi

Computers I can do. Cars I can't. So I'm puzzled by this problem our car has developed.

The problem is that the speedo just shows zero but we've also noticed that the car becomes just a little sluggish. This sluggishness is more noticeable at slower speed.

The problem used to be intermittent but tonight I drove 3 miles out, then 3 miles back and the problem exhibited ALL the time. My wife then reported it was like that all the time on the way back from work today.

Just to confirm, when the problem was an intermittent one there'd be a small but noticeable 'jolt' as the performance took a dive then we'd notice the speedo showing zero.

Sometimes I also notice the headlights seem to have dimmed a little because when I accelerate I see the light becomes brighter. This may be coincidental.

I should add, the battery is only about a year old.

So, what could the problem be? Might it be an easy fix or is it likely to be expensive?

And yes, we do know a non-functional speedo is an MOT fail!
