ford smax - under powered? - saisho

i am thinking of buying a new smax .is the 1.6 diesei up to the job or should i go for the

2 litre? thanks in advance

If you're buying new the list price of the 2.0 diesel is only £200 more (1 %). I believe the 1.6 is adequate but the 2.0 should be just as economicakl as it won't have to work so hard to pull a big car along.

We had the 1.6 TDCi 110 in the C-Max, it was OK, just. I appreciate that the S-Max engine is slightly more powerful but since the car is quite a bit bigger and heavier I would expect performance to be at best similar.

Go for the 2.0

I have a Mk1 S-Max with 2.0 TDCi 140bhp and a slushbox automatic. It goes more than well although of course more power is always welcome!

Best to compare the torque and power figures of the 1.6 and 2.0 in a new S-Max against the old one to see if the 1.6 is any good.

The 1.6 has only 115bhp and 214lbs/ft.

The new 2.0 has 163bhp and 251lbs/ft.

The old 2.0 has 140bhp and 251lbs/ft. Not sure at what revs these figures come at though. Seems better to go for the new 2.0.
