Nissan Note - Wheel bolts - missing - galileo

Yesterday my daughter and partner called, I noticed that two bolts were missing from the front left wheel!

He said he'd had it serviced and MOT'd a couple of weeks ago and not touched anything, so presumed the bolts had fallen out since then.

We took a bolt from a back wheel so he went the short distance home with three on each nearside, will get replacements today and have words with the garage!

Taking one out and checking the rest, none of the bolts seemed tight enough to me,the threads had all been oiled: am I right in thinking that threads should be left dry?

(I put a touch of Copper grease on the coned underside of the head and use a torque wrench to do up, never had a problem with loosening)

Could be they had forgotton to replace them. I always grease my wheel bolts if only to stop that terrible 'screech' when you tighten the, it also of course stops them from going rusty, I have never had one come loose - except perhaps when I forgot to tighten them!

You may be right, Peter, just as serious a fault.

Three wheels had 4 bolts, none done up tightly enough, the two missing were at the same side of the wheel - usual system is replace and tighten bolts on opposite sides so perhaps less likely to have missed fitting, just not torqued up properly?

Since checking wheel bots is a basic of servcing and checking them after removal and replacement is basic quality control, they should complain in writing to the garage,

I also suggest finding a more competent garage..

Agreed i wouldn't be going back, i'd have to jack the car up, remove wheels and check security of brake caliper bolts, sump plug, oil filter etc, in fact anything they might have touched for peace of mind.

Update for info - daughter's partner went back today, garage will supply and fit a new set of Nissan locking bolts and wheel key (one of the missing ones was the security bolt) - will ensure emphasis is put on correct procedures for critical items.
