Alfa Romeo 147 - alfa 147 vs skoda yeti - davidfulton

I have owned since new an Alfa 147 2.0 petrol which now has only 64k miles on the clock and am thinking of changing possibly for a Skoda Yeti 4x4 (petrol?). This would improve my chances I hope of getting to work - I run a pharmacy on Dartmoor and must be able to offer a service irrespective of the weather . Over the last few winters a set of snowchains has enabled me to get up the road to work on the bad days - but dealing with ice and flooded roads is still an issue. However the Alfa has given me 10 years of good service and I still love owning and driving it - our other car is a 7 seater MPV (4 kids & dog) ! The Alfa needs some wear and tear items doing but is also due a scheduled cambelt change - the dilemma is do I spend the money and keep it for a few more years or do I spend the guts of £20k on a new/ish Yeti ? What might go wrong on the Alfa in the next few years - I am also sceptical about how reliable very modern cars with all their gadgetry ! Thoughts please.

You might be one of the few people who claim to 'need' a 4X4 who actually do!

Clearly 4X4 is an advantage in snow and ice, but not all two wheel drive cars fare equally badly. Narrower tyres perform much better in the snow-particularly with deep tread and a winter friendly compound. if you're running 215/45 tyres on the Alfa, this is part of your problem rather than lack of drive to the rear axle.

A reliable Alfa - you are clearly a very good and sympathetic driver! In your position I'd be tempted to chop in the MPV for something with 7 seats and 4wd, and keep the Alfa (which is worth more to you than it is in the market), change the cambelt and carry on until it gets unrealistically expensive.

Agree with unthrottled, some winter tyres should do the trick for you

OK - sounds like I keep the Alfa, spend some money on it to keep it going and hope for the best !

A 7 seater 4X4 wont work for me as my wife uses that car during the day - also most 4X4 7 seaters are very small in the rear - no good for bigger kids - I know as I have looked at all of these - had considered an XC90 once - which brings me on to hirecars for bigger families but that I will keep for a separate post !

Nobody really said what else might go wrong on the Alfa at this age - still on the original exhaust and only had new discs for first time at last service.

Also considering a camblet changes will be £400- 500 (at local Alfa specialist) is it really worth it or do I take the chance ?

Why do you have to spend the thick end of 20k on a Yeti? Unless you heart is set on one, you could spend about 6k on a Subaru Forester. Superior all wheel drive system, very reliable, fun to drive and plenty of money left in the kitty for fuel.

It's always risky running an older car - you never know what's going to crop up. If it needs to be reliable, it might not be wise to use it as your daily driver. If you're dragging your heels over the price of a cambelt change (I hope that price includes water pump), then maybe you'd be reluctant about any extra work needed to keep it going. Alfa's of this generation are pretty reliable as long as the servicing is kept up.

No one here knows the car as well as yourself. It's just one of those decisions that has to be made - maybe you know someone who can read the tea leaves :)

Friend of mine who lives in an out of the way place traded in his car for a Land Rover after getting stuck in the snow and being unable to get home in winter on a couple of occasions

This following winter he was still unable to get home as other vehicles blocked the road!
