Renault Grand Scenic 2012 - Keyless entry/start question - wrightstuff

Hi, I will be buying 2012 Grand Scenic soon which has keyless entry and start. I am trying to find the answer to this question, hope someone can help..

When you approach the car with the key card in your pocket/bag etc the door will unlock when you hold one of the handles. It will also start without having to put the card in the reader slot in front of the gearstick (that much I know!)

Sometimes we put our two young kids in the car when loading up to leave (it is on the drive close to the house) That way we know where they are and can lock up properly etc.

My concern is that it would be possible for someone to jump in, start the car and drive off! This could happen whether the kids are in or not! Is there a way round this or is this a fatal flaw for keyless entry systems?

Any help from clued up Renualt people / owners etc would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Dave

Not being specific to Renault models, but keyless entry systems have sensors placed around the car, both inside and out, that detect if the key is in the cabin. So the car cannot be started unless the key is inside.Thats the theory. Why would anyone want a keyless system ,can,t see the advantage. All they do is go wrong.hth

I agree but the car suits our lifestyle at the moment.

I'd much prefer a normal key, at least you know where it is when you are driving! This type of technology is just stuff to go wrong I think. At least I will have a 4 year warranty.

I'd be interested to know if that is the case where it won't start unless you are actually in the car.

Thanks, Dave

Before agreeing to buy a Hilux i wished to know if i could lock the car with the door key with the engine left running, so on the test drive i with their agreement tested it, it worked i bought, i wouldn't buy any vehicle that did not have this facility.

Would seem simple enough to visit the dealership you intend to buy from and see if it does what you want.

With keyless start if you have the car engine running and leave the car, it can be driven away without the key. Mind you the beeper will drive you mad but it can be driven.

Dont leave the engine running and walk away from the car. I doubt the insurance will cover you if you do that anyway.

When the engine stops for any reason you wont be able to restart without the key.

I have a Grand Scenic 2012 with keyless. As the other say the car won't start unless they key in inside the car or in very close proximity. What I find annoying is when leaving the kids as you do when packing and having the car constantly locking when i walk away to get something else from the house and the alarm then going off.
