Gritting Lorry - Gritting the M5 Friday 7th September 2012 at 24'C - Mr Fox

I was travelling up the M5 last friday, and I came upon two gritting lorries, gritting the road, also the gantry signs warned of "salt Spreading" Now why can this be ? the temperature was unusually warm at 24 degrees according to my car display. No freezing conditions were forecast in the area. It seems like absolute madness to me.

How else do you train a gritting wagon operator? Its a bit late once the snow comes.

Not every Police car you see with blues and twos is going to an emergency, is that also a waste?

I can't imagine that it needs much training, to be honest.

Indeed, they were actually throwing the grit out the back of the machine. I wouldn't have thought that would be neccesary just to train the operator to drive the rig.

Any sensible answers ?

Not to that, but I have just seen a roadsweeper lorry 'cleaning' the hard shoulder of a chunk of the M6. Is that really necessary? There haven't been any accidents etc. I've never seen a roadsweeper out clearing up on the m'way anyway!

Probably a government scheme to make cars rust faster and chip a few windscreens - all extra money in tthe economy!

My guess would be that they were testing it before its needed, lets be honest, it will have been stood since April probably. Would not expect them to be using salt though, sand is much cheaper. Thinking about it I have seen gritters used in really hot weather to spread sand on melting tarmac in the past.

Vehicle came through with a gentle spray fuel leak, so send gritters out to sand the route, or indeed a section of tar starting to melt?

Don't know, but i seriously doubt that rock salt was being laid.

A couple of minutes googling reveals all gritter operatives require a winter maintenance operations qualification.

Out checking the correct function of the spreading mecahnism before the first time it is needed in anger, probably later this month?

If you have any doubt I have photos, and photos of the front of my car plastered with salt.

Are you seriously saying I'm making this up ?

People are certainly not saying you are making this up but most posters appear to be saying that the vehicle was out for testing prior to the winter season and not out salting the road when the temp was 24 degrees. It also makes complete sense that they use coa*** (why has the site replaced coar5e with ***) sand and not rock salt for this purpose.

There is always the possibility as one poster said that diesel had been spilt and that sand was being put down to make the road safer.

If you are not happy with the replies on the site why not ask the people who really know i.e. the local authority responsible for road salting in winter.

Take the "co" off the front and see what you are left with. The filter is as thick as pig****.

Lets try this.....those with the spa*** title of Penistone should look at their old licence which uses the first five letters...

ha ha - one out of three!

Sorry - there doesn't seem to be a way of making a swear filter intelligent! If you type the name of a certain football club managed by Mr Wenger, it comes out even worse....

a***nal

Any other swear filer since 1998 doesn't filter with spaces after or before the word to prevent things like sc***horpe.

Snow? We don't get snow compared to the situation in Alaska. They have poles on each side of the road so when the road is under several feet of the white stuff you can have a guess at where the road is. National guard was called out last year to dig people out their homes, wonder what hey would make of our gritting lorries?
Gritting Lorry - Gritting the M5 Friday 7th September 2012 at 24'C - skidpan

Saw a gritting lorry yesterday morning, it was -2C on the A9 and the verges were white over. Earlier in the week the tops od the Cairgorms were white over.
