LVLOs (AKA regional DVLA offices) to close in Oct 2013 - bombshell! - runnerbean14

LVLOs were closed for the day yesterday from 1100 hrs. I gather the reason was to announce to staff in all 39 offices that they will all be redundant from October 2013 as the function is being transferred to DVLA Swansea / online.

The systems for importing / registering a vehicle or transferring a cherished number are now so bureaucratic and complicated that one transaction usually needs two or three visits to the LVLO to satisfy the ever changing documentary requirements and Kafka-esqe situations that continually arise.

How the powers-that-be think this is going to work online / remotely is beyond me. I'm all for saving taxpayers' money but for this to work they are going to have to make the systems FAR simpler, and I doubt that's now achievable.

Anyone up for starting a lobby to reverse this?

Why does transferring a cherished number take more than one visit - it's obviously a requirement to have ALL the necessary paperwork to hand.

When I bought a cherished number from DVLA, it arrived in the post at 11am next day so I went to the DVLO, did the transfer and was at the local car accessory shop by 3pm getting new plates made up - simples!

It's hardly news - the basic announcement came out earlier in the year.

Granted it's a pain as sometimes they insist on inspecting the car, and the form was to take it to the LVLO - goodness knows what this will become now.

I've only had two dealings with LVLO's and both times I got good service, especially the first time as the task I was trying to do was very odd.

I've recently had a good outcome from DVLA to another odd query, but the response time to a letter... at least 3 months. Worth it for the outcome, but would have been a severe pain had import or registration of the car in question depended in it. I'd have got nowhere with a phone call - stock phone answer would have been 'impossible'.

Given that 20,000 redundancies have just been announced for the armed forces, I'm not sure the fate of a few thousand extraneous civil servants is not really a major priority.

What does the DVLA actually do?? The system is only so complicated because it is a regional job creation scheme . Good riddance.
