2002 golf4 tdi 150 pd - turbo fault - pmd

Can anyone help with my problem please? Ive had a problem with the turbo on my golf tdi 150 for a few months. When the cars first started the turbo wont kick in properly under 2000 revs and when its warmed up its fine. Also a couple of times while picking up speed the engine management has tripped the turbo off with nothing coming up on the dash but alls fine when the engine is turned off then started as usual. Now after a cambelt change two days later the turbos off permanently but just drives like a normal diesel. Yet again nothing up on the dashboard and no more smoke than usual. On tha fault machine it mentions the boost control and gives a fault code of p1556. Does anyone know what the problem is and what the code means. Any help will be much appreciated.

In short you're loose pressure to the turbo ie there's a leak most likely.

What mileage has the car done and where are you based?

17964/P1556 - Charge Pressure Control: Negative Deviation Possible Symptoms
  • Reduced power output
  • Limp mode
Possible Causes
  • Boost Pressure too Low
  • Hoses/Pipes incorrect connected, disconnected or leaking
  • Charger Pressure Control defective
    • VNT (variable nozzle turbo): nozzles stuck
  • Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75) defective
Possible Solutions
  • Check Hoses/Pipes to/between Components
  • Check Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75)
  • Check / Clean / Replace Charge Pressure Control
    • Check / Clean mechanism for variable nozzles

thanks for the advice im going to have a good look at the weekend. Ive also been advised to use innotec turbo cleaner. Have you any experience with the product?

I very much doubt cleaning the turbo would make any differance, so would leave that for the time being. What happens is that gunk builds up around the variable vanes in the turbo, and the vanes stick open > hence overboost/turbo shut down. Your code relates to underboost, so far more likely something is leaking air.

Chances are you have a leak in one of the vac pipes. Failing that a leak elsewhere in one of the air pipes that feed the turbo, or you may have a split in the turbo actuator diaphragm (unlikely if you're still on the original turbo, as it's the cheap aftermarket actuators which are fitted during a turbo-refurb that split more prematurely compared to the original e.g. Garret actuator diaphragms).

Check/replace all the vac pipes first. You can buy silicone tubing off ebay to replace the vac pipes (and far cheaper than what VAG sell) - you'll need 3mm and 5mm internal dia. tubing.

Thanks for all the advice, after checking through all the pipework thoroughly a defective pipe leading to the turbo was found. A split was cut off the end and reconnected. All fine now the old tractors whistling again. Thanks again

For future ref - As well as the common failure of the flexible vacuum pipes (as per this fault) it is also worth checking the ridgid plastic pipes (pleanty of these crossing the bulkhead) as if these rub/vibrate against anything they eventually wear through. I had this happen on my Skoda Superb producing similar symptoms. Yet again the ridgid pipe was cut short and the flexible pipe re-attached. The other thing that can fail are the vacuum solenoids (1 for EGR, 1 for Turbo vanes and 1 for aniti shudder) .
