I'm looking for automatic diesel estate under £3k - Koshe

Hi,

could you recomend me what used car to buy under £3k? The criterias are:

* diesel

* automatic

* under £3000

* as low maintenance cost as possible

I was hoping to find Toyota with these criterias but so far no luck.

Can anybody say anything about 2002 CITROEN C5 2.2 HDi SX? (or any other french car)?

Which make to look for and which to avoid?

Thanks for any help.

All cars for this price will require maintenance. Don't look for a specific model rather look for the best example of a range of models. Do you know what size you want? How many miles do you do a year. A diesel may be a waste of time.

Mercedes CDI C class estate..: rust, maintenance costs and high miles.

Citroen C5 HDI: maintenance and electrical issues.

Alf Romeo estate diesel.. space and unreliability. (bargepole job unless you get a well looked after one ). Floorpan rust can be terminal!

Mondeo estate: safe choice... Will be high miles..

Vectra estate? A new fuel pump will be more than car is worth... and it's GM as well ...

Toyota? Only 73 in UK under£3k

I don't think Toyota offered a Diesel auto estate car in this country until latest Avensis, could well be wrong, often am.

Don't get the 2.2Hdi, it had a DPF from day 1 in 2001. The 2l was DPF free for quite a few years after so will give much better MPG.

I don't know about the mileage as this will be my first car in the UK. My approximate miles could be in around 10000. Do you think it's waste of time to look for diesel considering this kind of mileage?

Without doubt. The saving will be modest, the possible costs of repair - high. Look at all suitable cars ignoring the engine.

You're best looking for a good mainstream Japanese car (Avensis would be good for reliability) or a Mondeo (good for ease of parts and repair. Also consider the Octavia estate.
