I need to book a hire car soon for my holiday in San Diego. Its been a while since I've been to the USA and its seems like many other things its gotten a bit more confusing with regards to the insurance.

Some comanies quote with full Collision Damage Waiver, but some companies are unclear as to what the standard package is but try to sell you bronze silver gold packages as extras.

My question really, is do all US hire cars now come with what we consider to be fully comp insurance with a small excess ?

The basic insurance on a usa hire car is effectively third party only. Personal suggestion, having used them in the states is go to holiday autos, get a price on the website, and then call them and ask for cover for everything! If you buy third party policies beware as you have to claim yourself. Whatever you do, if something goes missing from the car, (my case 4 wheel trims stolen) get a police report, DO NOT drive offroad, if there is mud under the car go through a carwash before returning it. Some companies now digitally photograph the car out and into their car parks, but take a careful look yourself.and take photos yourself, and finally be aware that many of the companies now have trackers in their cars and if you speed THEY will charge you for it! And as I am sure you know if the San Diego finest stop you, be oh so polite! Don't forget to visit croce's and the b street brewery. Have fun, wish i was along for the ride. and dont forget the drive over the coronado bridge.

I have had good value and servive buying extra insurance through insurance4hirecar.com. I am going to Austria on Friday; Avis wanted £114 for 7 days CDW and I bought ir for £31. I have had to claim on it once previously and it was fine.

I can also recommend Holiday Autos - I've used them a number of times and their price includes all the extra insurances. One thing I have found is that when you go to pick up your car they will always try to get you to pay for an upgrade to a higher grade of car. Don't do it - in about 7 out of 10 times that this has happened to me they have given me the upgraded car free, presumably because they didn't actually have any of the cars in the group I had booked. The last time was in Washington DC where we had ordered a fairly low spec car as there were only 2 of us and we weren't going to be doing a lot of miles. We ended up with a car about the size of a Mondeo, but with a 5.3 litre V8 - it was a bit thirsty though.

I also endorse Holiday Auto. You will no doubt arrive with CDW but reception staff will do their damnded to sell you some more insurance. My wife and I arrived in San Francisco along with a Jumbo-load of passengers, all of whom seem to have booked a hire car. Hire staff took an extra 10 or 15 minutes per hirer in sales talk, even though no-one seemed to fall for it.

I know this scenario well from when I used to go to the USA a lot in the early 90's. One time I was at LAX and the rental guy tried for 20 min to sell me a convertible upgrade. I said no just give me the car I'd booked over and over again. Eventually he gave up and begrudgingly said heres your keys, car is in lot B12, and low and behold a very nice convertible was in that slot !

I have now booked thro Holiday Autos, seem okay so far and after trying many other companies they seem like for like competitive. Strange thing is, that I tried to book hotels and cars direct with the USA companies and in US$ and they were all more expensive than using Lastminute.com or Holiday Autos.

Recently used Dollar @ Phoenix Sky Harbour.

We booked in advance online and the process was completely painless on arrival at the dedicated car hire facility situated a couple of miles away from the airport (free regular courtesy buses) Drivers will lift your luggage on/off for you without question/hesitation/tipping!). America is so much slicker at doing stuff like this than we are. It really puts us to shame.

We were expecting a 4-door, Auto, Air-Con Hyundai Sonato (or similar) but were given a free choice of anything that took our fancy "from the second row over there'. We plumped for a brand-new petrol Chrysler 200 LX on a temporary 'paper plate' – was extremely comfortable at all times during the 1500 miles covered in the 8-days spent there touring Arizon, Nevada and down Mexico-way. Cost for the 8-days was just under £200, including a full tank of gas, so vehicle returned on vapours with no questions!

Unsure exactly what out 'package' was as my buddy booked it but it was fairly comprehensive. The only additional insurance we allowed ourselves to be sold (+$40.00 plus Tax) was for Breakdown/Recovery cover, which when crossing so many long desert(ed) roads we deemed a sensible option.

DO NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE A SAT-NAV in the deal – it proved to be absolutely invaluable in the depths/back streets of Phoenix, Vegas, Tuscon, etc., particularly at night! Driving in the States in so civilised. I can't wait to return.

Enjoy ...
