VW Passat Estate - Looking to buy a VW Passat Estate - dvd777

Hi to all,

I am thinking of buying a VW Passat estate. It will be used as a daily communter for work and Long weekend trips with the family. I want a reliable car (Otherwise I would have got a discovery 2!!)

From the search I did it seems that they are not that reliable after all- what is your take on this?

Also, I want a diesel, which engine should I go for. Again I would sagrifice a bit of performance for reliability. Is the 1.9 TDI ok or should I go for a 2.0 one, and which one? I do not want a high mileage one:L what is high mileage. I want to keep the car for a few years.

Lastly I was also considering the Mondeo (but I have an 05 Focus and it is already rusting), a BMW3 Series (Rear wheel drive and Winters can be pretty bad here) or a Skoda Octavia ( Still influenced by the bad name Skoda had years ago...I know...)

Your Comments will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

My advice would be to avoid the 2l PD engine, it's had various problems over the years.

The 1.9PD is an excellent efficient engine but must have had the special PD oil when serviced, so VW service history is important although some VW dealers use the wrong oil. There should be no ticking noise from the engine, the cam wears if incorrect oil is used.

If you have the money, go for the 2l CR engine, fitted from mid 2008. High mileage wouldn't bother me, they have usually been trundled up & down the motorways the whole of their life.

The B5 ( pre 2006 ) has some basic shortcommings with leaking pollen filter seals & blocked plenum chamber drains ( check passenger side carpets for any dampness ) but are easily fixed. Look at http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/ for in depth info.

The 2l PD are often advertised as having the CR engine, look under the bonnet at the engine cover, both have 4 flutes moulded into the plastic cover, the CR flutes are at a 45 degree angle wheras the PD cover flutes are in line with the car.

You would be far better off with a Mondeo more choice and less problems VAG engines are fraught with trouble from injectors to oil pumps the best ones are the 1.9tdi if you can get a clean one.

I had a 2 litre diesel. It was a dreadful car. I couldn't wait for the lease to end. I got rid of it in March last year when it was 3.5 years old. It had a new cyclinder head gasket after about 18 months. It suffered many oil leaks and when oil wasn't dripping on my drive the engine was using it up. I was frequently topping up the oil. A few other people at work had the same car and commented on how often they had to top up the oil.

The build quality wasn't great. Various plastic bits broke or fell off. The gear knob was replaced twice because the chrome peeled leaving sharp edges to dig into my hand every time I changed gear.

Perhaps I was unlucky.

A colleague of mine had one with the same engine - his was written off by the leasing company at 3.5 years old when the engine had to be replaced.

Before the Passat I had a Touran with the same engine. It too drank oil and needed a new cylinder head gasket!

I forgot to add that the gearbox had to be removed so a sensor could be replaced.

I don't understand how the Passat gets such a good reputation for reliability and quality.

Mondeo all the way.

Thanks guys.

Wow!! As I said, had it not been for reliabiliy I wou;d have spent my money on a Discovery 2. I am surprised to hear that there rae so many issues with the Passat.

Yes I suppose I can look at Mondeos. What about BMW S3 - I would need to get one with higher mileage for my money though.

Thanks again

Dave

Hi Dave

Having been to 'not so' proud owner of an 06 Passat 2.0tdi140 I have to agree that althogh the ride is comforable, the gremlins in our particular car were too numerous. The airbag light for me was the final straw. Creaking suspension, poor finishing and trademark rattles made it more of an irritation than a joy to own. Whist the car was accomplished on the motorway (25k miles per year average) as with all things it had it challenges!

I ended up trading it on and getting a low carbon BMW 525d SE with 60k on it full main s****** history etc etc etc and more receipts than my wifes purse after a shopping spree. Much better drive and absolutely solid in every way. Best car I have owned. Service costs were appauling. £350 for a basic oil and filter change from a specialist inde was better than the £670 the s******s wanted. After 35k miles, BMW and I have parted and I now have the Skoda Superb Estate.

Go Skoda all the way and you will not regret it, I certainly havent. I thought long and hard and drove many models before opting for superb. Lifestyle and two small children meant an estate was a must., It was a close run between the Octavia and the Superb, but the deal on the table was such that I went for the larger of the two,,,but there really is not much in it. The difference in build quality between the Passat and the Skodas was incredible! The skoda is probably better put together than even the six pot BMW I passed up.

Octavia really is a car for the people and does its job very well. Three quaters of the taxi fleets in the UK cant be wrong, Long term it makes a sensible bet too as once you have finished with it, so long as it is maintained and relatively tidy, you have a captive market of willing purchasers in the form of the nations taxi crews.

Good luck and remember... you will never get bored with a ford.

I was very tempted by the Skoda. I previously had a Fabia as our second car and it was very well put together. Hard to believe it is part of the VW Group!

The one thing that put me off the Supeb Estate was that you can't have self levelling suspension. I don't understand why this isn't an option on an estate car. I had it on the Passatt and it was excellent (one of the few things that was!).

What is your budget? I ask because the original Superb is the infamous Passat in drag and suffers many of the same water ingress and electrical problems. I don't know if these were rectified with the Mark 2, so be careful.

There's no doubt the Passat is a bit of a dog, countless tales of woe on the forums. A friend of mine has a tdi at work and it is a nightmare car, leaks water, random electrical gremlins etc.

If you want reliable transport, I would recommend an Avensis estate as your best bet.
