ATF fluid should be sweet smelling and red/pink in colour.

Chances are that if it hasnt been changed yet it will have a tinge of brown to it.

Even if it looks ok visually; I would still change it if you have driven over 40k in it since you have had it.

It may or may not solve your problem - hopefully it does

Two points:-

ZF only approve one oil for use in this transmission; it's Esso LT 71141

This transmission is electronically controlled, so from a mechanical point of view there is no difference between the transmission automatically shifting from 3 to 4, or the driver doing it manually. If the transmission will change under manual control then I think that this indicates no mechanical or hydraulic (or oil) fault. If the gearbox is deciding to stay in 3 then I would say that it's an electronic issue.

Mine sometimes has a fault with the oil temperature sensor and this causes it to hold lower gears in an attempt to cool itself down, or it could be that the transmission isn't talking to the engine ECU correctly and so isn't picking up throttle position information, or it could be some other issue.

some autos if petrol are also have vacum controlled gear change via a module

If a vacum pipe is leaking anywhere the auto box asumes the car hasnt reached optimum point for changing gear and will hang a lot longer. Always worth a check.

Another point with petrol autos is spark plugs ! some high resistance plugs cause lots of electrical noise under the bonnet and will play havoc with aiuto box change points.

iether fit genuine plugs or shield all the auto box loom with a braded shiedl and fit a good earth on the shield.

I am sorry to interrupt but I have an issue with my 2002 peugeot 607 2.0 litre petrol manual gearbox. When stationary the second gear engages normally.upon moving(even at low speeds),the second gear will never engage and makes the noise synonymous to shifting to the reverse gear whiles the car is in forward motion.initially,i thought it was a problem with the gear oil so i took it to the mechanic and he drained about 2litres of dirty gear oil.we replaced that with 5L of gear oil from TOTAL lube bay(there is no ESSO company in my part of the world)After this ,the problem still persist such that from 1st gear i have to move to 3rd gear because 2nd will not engage.I would like to know what could be the possible cause of this defect and also, how much volume of fluid (in litres) should be put in the gearbox and what is the recommended gear oil.?

secondly,i also own a 2004 peugeot 607 2.2 litre automatic gearbox.it currently has no issues but in anticipation, i would like to know which precautions to take when having the gearbox oil changed and HOW MUCH of WHICH particular gearbox oil is most appropriate for the car.i imported it from germany at 140 000km and the timing belt had been changed(i just dont know when exactly it was changed).it has now done 168 000km.

when should i change the timing belt and which precautions must be taken in the course of?

thank you for your kind attention.
