Over the Easter break I took a trip to our regional shopping mall in Basingstoke to pick up wife & children from a day's account draining. I was very surprised to see a typical retail unit, on the second floor, transformed into a VW showroom, with a Polo, an Up! and the new Beetle squashed into a shop floor barely bigger than a typical jewellers.

Ok, car displays in shopping centre's is nothing new, but this was no temporary arrangement parked on the ground floor aisles. This is a dedicated VW store with cars crammed into it, on the second floor balcony, next to a health & supplement store.

It immediately reminded me of recent comments made by VW's Martin Kropp, their chief designer, that VW aspires to be "the automotive Apple". Coincidentally, the VW shop in Basingstoke shopping centre almost directly faces the Apple shop.

I assume this particular VW shop won't sell you their goods right there and then, instead providing a no-pressure showroom experience, and a polite push around current finance deals. Even though I have no need for a change of car, I had a nosey around the shiny black Up! at the front.

I'm not a fan of Apple's products but their after care service and support department seem excellent judging from feedback and from friends' experiences - something which apparantly VW's is not

A little more investigation reveals that this 'retail outlet' is part of a Surrey/Hants franchise network, beginning with 'M'.

Their website states the VW shop is there for two months, as a sort of experiment, to see how it works out. It's specifically for the Up! and the Beetle, although I couldve sworn there was a Polo in at the back.

Either way, not such a bad idea, in theory. How many casual passers-by turn into car dealerships on a whim, which are often found in pedestrian unfriendly business parks, or off main roads? Probably not a lot. Whereas the footfall in a typical major town retail centre could be well worth testing.

Oohh a challenge..lets see.

iPhone - grip of death where if you hold the phone in a certain way ..the signal goes away.

iPhone - doesn't like very cold weather (it bricks) but they still sell them in Finland etc.. (are they hoping for a sudden burst of global warming perhaps?).

iPhone - VERY sensitive to damp environments so don't take it in when your having a nice relaxing bath. It has some built in damp indicators that if they are tripped when they open it up Apple won't repair under warranty..even if its not a damp fault eg cracked screen or borked battery.

Then there's Foxconn the very inexpensive factory where Apple make their product (for peanuts) in China. Now I'm not saying it's a bad working atmosphere and they toil away for peanuts..oh yes I am whoops. Foxconn have even had to put anti suicide nets round the plant to catch the jumpers. VW have to be better than that.

Batteries...why can't you just take it out and pop another one in?

So I think VW's service is already actually BETTER than Apples.

At least no VW I've ever owned has decided 'your driving it wrong' and refused to overtake.

And a VW - even a 1950s Beetle - will start quicker than any computer.

Extraordinary, isn't it: a modern car is loaded with computers but all are operational instantly when the car is started. Yet a typical PC takes 2 - 3 minutes to be ready to use: an Apple iPhone about one minute.

Possible explanation - the software in the car hopefully owes nothing to Microsoft.

There are inherent problems with most new 'smartphones'

The 'grip of death' is also on the HTC sensation

Some smartphones have been known to spontaneously combust!

So VAG and Apple both make products with design flaws.

If you go into an Apple store - they will try to fix your problem/resolve the issue. They also seem to be very good at honouring the warranty. My friend had a 'harline' crack on his Iphone screen which was came about 8-9 months after purchase. The phone was not dropped - so it would seem some sort of manufacturing fault

Took it in to his local Apple store to ask if it was serious/repairable. Given a new phone there and then.

As it happens - you must not have driven a DSG?

Apple makes products their customers want to use and are a pleasure to use. Look at how they revolutionised so many simple and obvious things like mobile web browsing and cloud integration. Others had solutions to these on feature-packed devices for years before Apple, but they were pretty damn unusable.

Good luck to VW.

I am not an Apple fan - Android all the way!

That aside....

I was at the Gadget Show in the NEC today. They had some VW Up!s on a little test track to showcase the 'city braking' i.e. at 19mph or under the car will brake, kick in the ABS and stall if you're going to hit something else. I had a go - clever stuff; I will never be worried about being tailgated by a VW Up! anyway!! The instructor asked me to look away to the side and drive at a panel. Sure enough everything kicked in to stop the car.

It's an incredibly quiet car too; I didn't even know it was on at first because there's so little engine noise. Gearbox felt...sloppy, like there was too much play but then I am used to a gearbox which needs more force I suppose.

I was impressed by the looks of it (inside especially) which is saying something as I am not a fan of small cars. Oh my goodness I'll have to admit that it is a cute car <shakes head at self>

I will not however trade 15 years of Microsoft knowledge to Apples "you dont need to know how it works" environment. Likewise with phones, I have copmpared the Galaxy S2 with the IPHONE and whilst the IPHONE is perhaps a bit easier to use, the Galaxy is more flexible.
