Land Rover Defender - Insurers for no MOT - landiegirl

Hi

Sadly our Landie failed its MOT and needs lots of work with the welder! Its currently in the field awaiting a quiet bank holiday or two......

The insurance ran out last week and I cant find anyone who will insure a car with no MOT. I am looking for fire and theft cover ideally I have tried AA Admiral and NFU which no luck

Does anyone have any ideas for companies to try?

Thanks in anticipation

Suggest

They say one can insure anything (at a price) If the well named Companies won't touch you try an INSURANCE BROKER or two (yellow pages), or

Next time your in a Newsagent browse the 4 x 4 Mags and note those that offer Insurance.

One can understand why they refuse as it is a general condition that the vehicle is kept in roadworthy condition..

Dont' forget to put a SORN in to DVLA forthwith with what is left on the RFL otherwise you commit an offence.

The vehicle isn't roadworthy and it doesn't have an MoT. I can't see you getting insurance. As far as an insurer is concerned they are not to know what else is wrong e.g. no brakes. Why on earth would they want to risk it? The only option I can think of is to have it trailered away.

Thanks I think I have to go and browse the Landie magazines again, surely we cant be the only person restoring a car and wanting it restored whilst we do that?

Thanks for your help - at least I know there is not something obvious Ihave missed,

You may be able to find 'laid up' insurance, which is what the classic car restoration people use. Many of them require the car to be garaged though.

Why don't you not bother with insurance and get a friend to drive the vehicle to the garage (with a booked retest) on their insurance?

Hi Unthrottled, it's the vehicle that'd need to be insured - saw it on one of those Police Interceptors things, some chap thought he was covered due to his own personal insurance, but had a nasty surprise when he was stopped. Wouldn't want anyone else facing a £200 fine and six points after seeing that.

Also, isn't having insurance a requirment for SORNing the car nowadays?

Thanks RT - indeed, the only time a car does not require insurance is when it is SORNed. I got confused with the Continuous Insurance Enforcement introduced last year

Isn't it just that that chap's insurance didn't include 3rd party cover (because he was under 25 or didn't have fully comp)?

If you're really stuck and you live in the midlands or south you could hire a self hire car transporter from car transporters.com from £75/day.

If you read the original post, the insurance required is not for getting an MOT,but for fire and theft cover whilst in a field!!!

Is an old Landy with no MOT really that valuable?

Land Rover Defender - Insurers for no MOT - landiegirl

Good point - webuyanycar.com gave us a quote for over £1200 for it so I figured it was worth twice that :-) Hence why we wanted to insure it.

We have a classic car insurance now which is for cars being restored, so hope it shoudl be sorted now.

No, he was a sensible looking chap in his partner's Saab - not some b*****ole with a cap on backwards in a Corsa. He fully believed he was entitled to drive a third party's vehicle, however the Saab's insurance had lapsed; had it been in place he would have been fully legal. It was a sickener for him, and even the gentlemen in blue seemed quite sympathetic towards him; not to the extent they rescinded his ticket, of course.

Try Sorn insurance

www.sorninsurance.co.uk/

But I doubt that you will get cover, unless the vehicle is in a locked garage.

I would just get normal insurance. I have never been asked for MOT cetificate for any claim.

Land Rover Defender - Insurers for no MOT - unthrottled

How many claims have you had?!

There's an electronic register of MOTs so they don't need to ask for a paper copy. Does DVD know what the score is regarding 3rd party liability. I know they can't invalidate the 3rd party aspect of insurance for having the wrong wheels or winter tyres, contrary topopular belief.

An Insurer can stipulate at the start of a policy eg when quoting that the vehicle has an MOT.

They cannot however refuse an own damage or third party claim if the MOT runs out during the cover period. Plenty of the downmarket companies stipulate in their policy the car must have a current MOT. This is completely unenforcable, the worst case scenario would be that in the event of a total loss that they reduce the amount they pay you to reflect the reduced value of a car without a current MOT (Typically pay the "Trade" value")

Companies are precluded from refusing claims due to mechanical condition of the vehicle by Road Traffic Act 1988. In these cases then they have to pay our 3rd party. But, as I understand it, if the policy stipulates that vehicle to be kept in road worthy condition then if breached it gives them the power to make a claim aginst Insured.

Spot on, not having an MOT does not mean the car is unroadworthy and the cause of the incident would have to be caused or significantly caused by the vehicle being unroadworthy
