E46 BMW 320D 2002 - Stalling in first gear - iworld

I seem to have a problem a niggling problem with the car - when i sleect first gear it often has the tendecy to stall, i have developed a style or i have got used to the car. when i lift the clutch up and the revs are little - i feel there is a hestitation unless it has a few extra revs - this has casued me to stall the car - even someone else who drove it stalled it a few times - is this normal? does the clutch need adjusting - i have driven it on long journeys fine

I used to have a 5 series 2.5 IDI diesel which had no bottom end torque whatsoever and I was always stalling it, don't know what engine yours has. Most diesels have sufficient torque at tickover to be able to pull away without using any throttle, I thought the later BMWs were more like that. Could be that there is a problem with yours. You need to hear from someone who has the same car.

My car is a manual and the turbo is not kicking in at the moment - possibly due to a pipe issue - hopefully something really small and inexpensive. It seems to stutter and hesitate a little which leads to stalling or attemopted stalling - you have to give it about 1200-1500 revs to avoid it. you need a unique type of clutch control, maybe it is common and i have to get used to it. I am, just owndering if there are others with similair problems - it is the first BMW i have owned

I have not driven one with a common rail engine but my son informs me that they have excellent low down torque so should pull away at tickover like my 406 so I would strongly suspect you have a problem.

turbo problems are common on 320d's pre 2005 - you may want to get a local trusted garage to have a look and see what the problem is

There is no proble, with the Turbo as it boots okay - so what else could it be then?

Sounds like lack of fuel at low revs probably an electronic control problem, you will have to get the fault codes read.

Hi I dont know about the gearing on the 2002 model because itll have 5 gears I presume, Weve got a 2003 tourer with 6 gears and really to me 1st and reverse are too highly geared when first started from cold in the morning and the engines still a bit "grumpy" itll try its hardest to stall if not careful once you set off. once warm its fine but you still have to have at the back of your mind that its easy to stall espaecially when pulling out of a junction to beat that 44 tonner!! and several other people I know with bms say the same. In reverse unless youve got a good run backwards its nearly a slip the cutch job which i personally dont like, saying that it does actual 46mpg so Im happy

So Id say your car is "normal" unless its got another mechanical problem
