First time buying used so any advice welcome

Need to upgrade to a big family car, was thinking something like this:

2008(58) Ford Mondeo 1.8 zetec tdci 5dr 125bhp 75k mileage ..... £7k

I need to PE a 04 Fiesta Flame 1.4 with100k on the clock and general wear and tear - cosmetic scatches to paint alloys etc. 12months MOT and FSE tho

Im hoping to stick to 5k cost to exchange, does this seem reasonable?

That'll give you an idea of tradein value.

£7k seems a little steep for the Mondeo, I don't think I'd be wanting to pay much more than £6k for that. £7k is more 2.0TDCI money.

thanks for the reply

just got a part exchange quote of £1300 from the network q site, which is kind of disappointing but probably realistic

but if I could get the mondeo for less than 6.3k that would keep to the 5k budget :¬)

If you look at autotrader, you'll see that dealers are offering similar cars for sale at not much more than that. I think it is fair. You pay for the convenience of part-ex. They get a lot of junk foisted onto them. If you're confident, you could try a private sale, but you'd only be looking at a difference of a couple of hundred pounds.

yeah, I'm not too hung up on the part ex as long as I can get the asking price down a bit

But how come you can get £1000 part-ex for any old banger - I've seen this kind of deal all over the place - is it a con? Do they just bump up the purchase price, or not negotiate it?

Yes! My mother bought a car last summer. The dealer offered her a derisory part-ex value and refused to budge on the purchase price. She thought about for a day, then went back and bought the car. She thinks that she got a fair deal-and so do I.

That p/x sounds about fair for your Fiesta to be honest.

Mondeos for around £6k:

thanks for all the responses

On a related question, insurance is up at the end of the month, and I usually pay up front (cos its cheaper that way), but what happens if I change car straight after? I would expect I could upgrade the insurance, but would the insurance company take the opportunity to screw me? Could I get my money back and go elsewhere? How does it work?

You ring them up and tell them, and then they will swap everything over for you, and you pay the difference (say you got a bigger-engined car for example) or you might get a refund of the difference. My insurance company also charge me for changing paperwork - I bought a new car and had to cough up the extra fand pay an admin fee 'for changing documents'. So yes, the insurance company will look to screw some money out of you.

Only couple of days ago Part Exed my 04 Golf tdi, 62k miles for £4k for a 1.8tdci mondeo zetec for £6200; 67k miles. I think that was a good deal. Paying an extra £180 on my insurance. Also think the 1.8 does not have the DPF and the belt needs to be changed around 125k miles. Also getting the ECU upgraded to version H to sort out the flat spot issues as well as returning better mpg as part of the deal. Above all i'm hoping its a reliable motor and doesnt become a money pit as never owned a ford before.

Could be worth looking for 2.0 TDCI Zetecs of the same age, I think they'd be around the same price. The 2.0 motor has more punch. The Zetec trim has most of the toys you'll ever need.

Its the price to change that matters, you have £5,000 as a budget unless you find some extra.

If a dealer offered you £5000 for your old Fiesta you would probably be delighted but he would simply inflate the Mondeo's price (assuming that is what you buy) to compensate. He would then give you an invoice that shows the Mondeo cheap and sod all in PX to save tax.

All some people are interested in is getting as much for their old car as possible, remember well an old work colleague of mine, had an old Cortina, bought a brand new Escort. Was offered £600 in PX but local garage (where he had it serviced) offered to take it off his hands for £400. I told him to snap their hands off and get a good discount off the new one but he would have none of it, all he was interested in was the highest price for his old car.

And no matter how many times you do the maths in front of them, they can't grasp the concept!

Ford Mondeo - buying advice - str8g8

Well, they wouldn't really budge on the price, knocked a couple of hundred off, giving me a cost to exchange of 5,500. On the plus side its ex fleet and has FSH etc.

Meanwhile I've found a 2007 Mondeo 1.8 TDCi Edge for £5495 :¬) 75k miles on the clock and had a test drive. Feels OK. However, no sign of a service history at all. Some stuff about a personalised number plate they've changed to a normal 57 one. Gave me a a cost to exchange of £4100, which seems like a great deal. But I'm worried about the history. Does it sound fishy? What can I do to check it out? Are those auto trader vehicle checks worth the money?

There are lots of Mondeos about, so you should be able to find one with a full service history - preferably from a genuine Ford garage as these things can be forged or doctored. Also the Edge is the basic model and may not have the equipment you want.

Shop around and look on Autotrader as Bobbin suggests.

Ford Mondeo - buying advice - str8g8

yeah I've been looking on autotrader and shopping around

found a 1.8 zetec for 5700 ... offered 1400 part ex so 4300 to change. seems like a good deal. 90k miles though its in good nick, ex fleet, full service history. think i'm gonna go for it :-)

Ford Mondeo - buying advice - Bobbin Threadbare

That seems a tad high to me but maybe it's regional - Mondeos might be cheaper in my neck of the woods. I'm finding 57-09 plate Ghia/Titanium trim Mondeos for between £5k and 6k in my area. Usually 1.8 or 2.0L ones, about 60-80k on clock. Pushing it up towards the £7k mark finds 2.5L Titanium X models on 58 plates.

Chymera - Can you give an update on how the Mondeo is going for you? Looking at making a 2008 1.8 or 2.0 my next purchase, just wondering about real world costs are (fuel, repairs etc). I'm going to be doing 20k a year, 90% motorway so I'm thinking it will fit the bill.
