Volkswagen Passat - cLUTCH SLIPPING - Paddyboy

Hello

I replaced clutch and flywheel a couple of years ago but now i think the clutch is slipping. It couldn't be done already! How can i fix this and how can i get to the root of the problem to stop it happening again?

Thanks

Assuming it was correctly aligned and the faces were clean, is the clutch receiving more torque than it was originally designed to take? ie if it is a TDI, has it had a remap?

I won't insult you by suggesting excessive clutch slippage during take off. :)

Did you replace the release bearing under the VW embossed cover on the end of the gearbox,or the push rod?

If you drive in such a way that you don't allow the clutch to slip i.e gentle throttle operation, it could last many more thousands of miles.

Did you fit a OE quality clutch? The cheapo kits on E-Bay and back street factors are cheap for a reason, probably made in China from Bamboo. Yo don't have to buy from your dealer, Valeo and Luk to name 2 manufacture clutches for the car makers and I have never had a problem with one ever.

Remaps make a big difference, the extra torque (as opposed to outright power) has been known to rip out the centres after major upgrades.

In my experience if its slipping it will only get worse, the more you let it slip the faster it wil wear.

Bottom line is simple, you will have to replace it again sooner rather than later. There is nothing more dangerous than a slipping clutch when you need to overtake quickly.

Another possibility is you have an oil leak that has contaminated the linings, if that is the case you will have to sort the oil leak and replace the clutch, once contaminated the linings are scrap.

Yup. You can't tell when they're slipping until the slippage is so bad that the road revs uncouple from the egine revs.

It's not just engine torque. High speed overrun can cause slipping, but the driver will be totally unaware of it.

In short, once you notice clutch slippage, the clutch's days are numbered.
