Peugeot - Peugeot 406 Diesel Estate - Trilogy

I'm looking for a cheap estate to replace my old Octavia TDi hatch. Has anyone any experience of the 406 diesel estate in either HDi or XUD form?

I had a HDi saloon and it was a good car. Never went wrong. The HDi engines are thoroughly decent but i cant comment on the estate version personally but they seem as popular as the saloon.

I think they've worn better than Mondeo's of the time.

I have it's sister ship the Xantia, 2000/X Hdi 110 owned from new. A quiet, comfortable and reasonably rapid load lugger. The Pug has different suspension but engines, drivetrain and underpinings are identical.

Had one major engine problem, a skipped cam belt in 2005, but almost certainly down to poor work by garage. At eleven years it still does 40 to the gallon in mixed use. Only niggle is a tendency to throw the engine management light on under hard acceleration - to costly to bothe diagnosing/fixing on a car worth buttons.

Trilogy - have a look at the Honda Accord thread started by Fryup: there seem to have been problems with the turbodiesels but not with the non-turbo. HJ's car-by-car reviews are also useful: there seems to be quite a lot under 'what's bad'.

If it were me I'd go for another Octavia (I did), but I appreciate you may just want a change.

Thanks Avant, I've had the Octavia for nearly 7 years. That is twice as long as any other car. I really want an old school diesel. An alternative is an A6 1.9 TDi. I often think an old Passat is the perfect estate car, but unlikely to be for me. I've looked at several and once was so convinced I was going to buy it that I took the cash with me. I don't really like them but it doesn't mean I won't end up with one.

Just curious, is it the looks of the Passat compared with the A6 that turns you off? They're identical beneath the skin ...

If you can find a Passat PD130 'sport' estate (easy to identify as it has a 6-speed manual) they're a very good compromise. Lower suspension but it merely reins in body roll, the ride is still smooth.

Thanks Craig, I'm aware they are pretty well the same underneath. The A6 shape is better. I don't really like estates with a vertical back, therefore Volvo V70 is excluded, and the Passat has a high waste line, which I don't like. Unfortunately lots have 'Relentless Black interiors' so that's another 'x' against. There are some with grey/beige interiors, but most are relentless black. :(

Also, I've driven a non and PD versions of both and prefer the A6, even though it isn't the most exciting car to drive. An alternative, is a c. 20 year old Mercdes estate. It's just a case of finding one. I won't consider anything as new as a common rail diesel. My mileage is around 20,000 a year so a petrol is out of the equation.

I looked at a 406 estate a couple of weeks ago and have rejected the idea of going for one. The seat at 156,000 miles was very saggy whereas my Octavia at 215,000 is as good as it was at 95,000. The rest of the car wasn't up to VAG quality.

I expect it will be another VAG 1.9 diesel for me as my budget is £2000. Unless anyone else has any bright ideas?
