Hi there.

Am interested to know what you guys think about rattles or creaks in cars:

What is the general cause of most dashboard rattles?

Do you live with them or drown them out with music?

Can a dealer fix dashboard rattles without creating new ones?

Do they really annoy you and ruin driving pleasure?

Which manufacturers are best for building rattle free cars?

Will be interesting to hear your answers!

Surely i cannot be the only person with a car that rattles :-( lol

Our C2 rattles like hell over third world roads, better than it used to be because i have fitted carpet underlay all round the hollow sections at the back end because you could barely think over the tyre roar especially on the original Michelins, my 15 year old MB doesn't rattle.

For a cheaply made French car its exactly what we expected, but it hasn't detracted from SWMBO's pleasure in the little pocket rocket, if it was built like a Yaris it wouldn't have come with an oversized Diesel engine and wouldn't be a warm hatch that does 50mpg+ and costs £30 ved, it flies because it weighs no more than a motorbike, you pays your money....

I don't expect rattles from Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, MB or BMW, i do expect less build quality from some other makes and given the attitude to customers once they've been paid i doubt if there will be too much done to put it right.

I don't like rattles either and have spent much time over the years gwetting rid of them. Many are not from the place you think and like the pipe tapping manifest themselves down the line. Worst rattle/ grating ever I heard was on a cruise liner. cabins are dropped in whole and when the sea is rough they rub against each other. Maintainance blokes got behind the panels and sprayed wd40 and bingo.....noise gone.

I hate rattles as they are not needed. I dont live with them I try everything possible to cure them. Dealers are usually hopeless at fixing most rattles unless they are a well known problem, so I see that a lot of the time it is up to the owner.

I have an Audi which IMHO is the best car for being rattle free. My wifes newish Ford Focus is a carcophany of rattles by comparison.

The only creak or rattle I have ever had from my Audi is a creaking noise at low speed and round town coming from the door frame, this was fixed by massaging silicone sparingly into all of the doorframe seals.

I think most rattles are causued either by lack of forethought in the component designs, or poor production methods. I would be interested to see how rattle-free some of these ultr-cheap Asia-Pac built cars are, I would suspecty the worst ??

I think manufacturers are spending more time making their cars reliable than rattle free. Also the amount of electronics in a car mean more cables and ducts which cause rattles in themselves.

My friend has a 8 year old renault clio. Windows don't work, warning lights on the dash - but it does not rattle!!

The CEO of VW recently inspected the new Hyundai i30 and wondered how they make it so rattle free while they and BMW can't. You'll find the clip on youtube.

The wife's '57 Golf rattles like a can of Holts, my 2002 Mazda is sound (but probably ue to the road noise!).

Can't / won't touch the missus' car as it's a company car, but always try and work out where they come from. Suprisingly they're often fairly simple fixes

My Mazda doesn't rattle. Occasional buzz/creak when it's been very cold and I put the heater on full whack. My Focus used to creak all the time! My husband's Celica whistles; if it's windy, his wing mirrors whistle!

I introduced a horrific new rattle to the Berlingo by changing the number plate lamps.

You have to remove the interior boot trim panel, I did it at 2 degrees C and the plastic was brittle so I broke one of the clips. :o(

Rover 800s were notorious fro - amongst other things - rattles from the dash.

Caused by poorly fitting trim rubbing together.

Soft foram wedged between the joints usually worked.

My Yaris has a spring which squeaks in the passenger seat base - only when there is a passenger. Can't get at it without removing seat and lower seat trim so I live with it ...

What is the general cause of most dashboard rattles? - Dunno

Do you live with them or drown them out with music? - They drive me nuts a because I listen to speech prog's mostly I find I can stillhear them regardless of volume.

Can a dealer fix dashboard rattles without creating new ones? - Probably not!

Do they really annoy you and ruin driving pleasure? - Yes

Which manufacturers are best for building rattle free cars? - Dunno, but my SAAB 95 was rattle free and after a few visits to the dealer for a rear end knock my Peugeot 407 is now a quiet drive. Having said this I am led to believe that Peugeot can be a problem car as far as creaks and rattles are concerned.

Just put some Judas Priest on the stereo. Works a charm :-)

True - but if I put Painkiller on it would probably make everything rattle with the drums!

I too hate rattles - and it is so difficult to track them! They sound like they are coming from one place but actually coming from another.

Rattles from doors I would ask the dealer to fix - in the dashboard I would just leave!
