Peugeot 406 - Reliable Old Diesel Commuter Required - kbaud

Have a 70 mile round trip mostly motorway commute each day.

Looking for something diesel and reasonably reliable or at least not too expensive to fix. Age and desirability are not much of an issue. Following research on previous threads I think maybe a Peugeot 406 HDI 2 litre or an older Mondeo [not TDCI due to various reliability horror stories I've read]. Alternatively a Rover 75 possibly or a Skoda Octavia.

To achieve 50mpg with a sub £2K budget would be ideal in one of the older models without as much worry about massive repair bills I've seen associated with the more recent diesels.

Any other models I've overlooked or advice about the ones listed gratefully received.

Something with the VW/Skoda etc 1.9 TDI PD engine would serve you well. You'd get a newer Skoda or SEAT than you would a VW or Audi.

The engine in the 406 is a good one but at a £2k budget you'd find that the rest of the car would be falling to bits.

As somebody who's owned two 406's (and still has one of them) i have to disagree with Avant. My local taxi firm still uses 406's (some of them on an X reg) with 300k+ on them and are still fine, the drivers prefer them to the 407's they experimented with for a while.

The 406 has a surprisingly decent reliability record given the reputation of the manufacturer. My first 406 was a 2.0HDi Executive and it was very good, only a dozey woman in a Zafira crashing into it prevented me owning it longer. I have a Y reg 2.0 petrol auto and aside from one of the fans giving up about 5 years ago its never given any trouble - and even with that problem it was still driveable due to having two fans. Other than that its been bulletproof and is superb in the snow (i took my old one through 3 feet of it and never got stuck once, and it started in minus 7 with no trouble).

Out of those choices i'd look at a 406. Diesel Mondeo's of that sort of age werent that economical anyway. The Rover 75 has a decent BMW diesel engine and it is a nice car which would be well suited to a motorway commute but im not sure i'd be confident about doing 20k odd a year in one.

Bad points of the 406 will be that it'll be tough to get one with under 100k on it now. Even the very newest models are now 8 years old. After a couple of years on your sort of mileage it will be worth sod all. They seem to go through brake discs surprisingly quickly and they have discs on all four wheels. Anything without a service history isnt worth looking at.

ETA: Avoid older models with the 1.9 and 2.1 litre diesel engines at all costs. Rough and not very economical. The HDi is much better.

Thanks for the input guys. The figures bear out your opinion of the 1.9 2.1 old 406s Jamie, they look more like 40mpg which would defeat the object - will keep eyes out for HDI in good nick.

A non turbo ,Renault Clio diesel,

For £2000 you should be able to buy a reasonable mileage 2004.

They're simple, economical and cheap to insure.although they're slow to accelerate ,they are ok at 70 mph in 5th gear.

Our children have run two of them, they've proved reliable ,they're not involving or exciting to drive ,but get the job done.

You can never depend on any £2K car being reliable or economical. Don't overlook certain petrol models, the Toyota Avensis 1.8 petrol is capable or mid 40s mpg on the motorway, as petrol is cheaper than diesel the cost of running difference will be negligable. They can burn oil so check levels fairly regularly. A good one will soldier on for ever.

I'm running the 2.0 Hdi 110 in a Citroen Xantia, X reg and now on 130k.

Pretty relaible lump well capable of over 40mpg. Although complex there are enough of them around for specilaists to be well clued up on any faults/weaknesses.

Mines prone to minor hiccups in the induction circuit, split hoses mostly. There's also an occasional hiccup that causes it to gag and bring on it's EM light under heavy acceleration. Goes off again after 10mins plus a stop and resstart.

Fault codes point to a valave in turbo but I'v lived with it so long now it doesn't bother me.

Mostly back up for family car but also Uni ferry for daughter and the odd UK holiday where its ability to carry 4 bikes on the roof is called on.

kbaud, I'm in exactly the same siutation as you. Just got a new job and has a simerlar commute so my Honda Accord Type R has to go :( I have been looking into and ecomical diesel but I really am starting to think a smallish jap petrol car would be much better financialy...

my commute is 80 miles a day so thats 1600miles a month, I was looking at a VW Golf 1.9 tdi which should do 60mpg average.

Say the car was £2000 it would cost me £168 (diesel @£1.40) on fuel.thats adding to a total £4184 including the car for a years motoring.

Now look at this say you got a Mazda 323f 1.5l which will be a lot more reliable. This will do 44mpg on mainly motorway miles.

You could easily pick one up for £1000, this would be £216(petrol @1.32) on fuel. The total being £3808 for a year.

So you would save nearly £300 by getting the petrol car and probably would only break even after 2 years. Also and most importantly the mazda would cost a hell of a lot less in maintanence. I used a mazda 323f because I know they are very reliable car and being the type of car it is they have normally had carefull owners, but most simerlar jap cars are very reliable. Much more so than euro cars.

i currently have a 406 hdi exec estate 2.0 hdi 110,bought in 2008 for £1500.00 at 158,000 miles, now in 2014 it has covered 285,000 miles and has never missed a beat,

i spoke to a taxi driver in norwich with one and he promptly laughrd at the miles it hadnt done not what it had done!!!!!!,i was then looking at his speedometer with 355,000!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont know the secret, but some people out there do, older peugeots are unbelievable

And there are still many people who swear blind they wouldn't touch a French car for love or money. Just shows the persistence of prejudices, possibly (but not necessarily) formed after one unlucky experience. I've owned nothing but Pugs since I sold a Punto in 1997. I'm prejudiced the other way.

In December 1999 i bought a 6 month old 406 with1,500 miles on it. Later it passed to my Father, who still drives it. Apart from 2 radiators nothing has failed or stopped working. The second radiator failed 9 years ago. Its well looked after and only done about 130,000 miles now. However its a 3 litre petrol, but as has been said before Peugeots diesels go on and on too. Of course any old car with an unknown history is a potential money pit, but 406's are brilliant if you get a good one, and i dont think that is too hard.
