Police condemn 147mph Jaguar driver Owen Swift was caught driving at 147mph by an officer using a laser speed gun

A police sergeant who caught a pensioner driving a luxury car at 147mph on a bypass has described the incident as "the worst case of excessive speed I have ever seen in 26 years of policing".

Company director Owen Swift, 68, was clocked travelling at more than twice the speed limit in his Jaguar XKR on the Malton bypass, in North Yorkshire, on the evening of June 11 last year.

He was caught by Traffic Sergeant John Clayton using a laser speed gun.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed Swift was found guilty of speeding at Scarborough Magistrates' Court after his claim that he was not the driver of the car was rejected.

A force spokeswoman said he was fined £700, ordered to pay £650 costs and an admin fee of £15.

He received six penalty points which were added to six points already on his licence and he was therefore disqualified from driving for nine months under the "totting" rules.

Speaking after the case, Mr Clayton said: "This is the worst case of excessive speed I have ever seen in 26 years of policing.

"Swift's disregard for his own safety and the safety of other road users beggars belief.

"The potential consequences of such shocking driving do not bear thinking about.

"I have seen first-hand the destruction caused by excessive speed. Swift should consider himself extremely lucky to be here to face the court and walk away with just a ban and a fine."

It's the lie about the driver that gets me. Do it, and take the consequences! There was a biker in the news the other week, doing 130-odd on an A-road in York, if I recall correctly. At rush hour!!! I've no problem with the 'autobahn' style limits on motorways, especially if there's no traffic, but speeding on dual carriageways and in towns is asking for trouble.

He didn't deny he was the driver, he refused to get out of the car for the police! And yes i have refused to get out of the car for an obnoxious policewoman who called for backup because of that, and when I told them it was because of her agressive behaviour, (she was on her own too!) and yes i was in shorts and a tee shirt in a posh car.. after a few words with a more sensible officer i was let go when I said that i would be making a complaint about her agressivity and asked for her chiefs name and hq address.

And when I was living in switzerland, was driving in france in my lotus and got afriendly finger wagging after being breathalysed, was actually stopped at the toll booths and the "radar" was on a long downhill stretch a couple of miles before the toll booth, was stopped for a random breath test, then told wouldn't be bothered by the clocked near 200kph.. 120ish mph.
Yes speeding in inappropriate conditions is bad, and deserves appropriate punishment, but the holier than thou attitude of some of the uk traffic cops is a bit much.
I much prefer the continental system, lighten your wallet a bit, last time cost me about £50 and on your way sir...

He should have said he was familiarising himself with the car. Selective memory Mr Clayton.

Years ago bfore I was maried a girlfriend told me that her father had one of the first XJ6s - must have been 1969-70. He was speeding up the M1 at 100 mph + and saw a police car in his mirror - but it couldn't catch him.

Eventually he had to slow down and stop: he got out of his car and said 'these are really wonderful - you should get them for the Force.' The officers had a good look over the new Jag and he got away with it.
