Renault Scenic 2004 - Squeaking Scenic - mjk1978

Hi All,

I've had this Scenic (2004 2.0 petrol) for a couple of months now. It's always made a noise from the engine compartment which is best described as a faint honk, or squeak with a period of about 1-2 seconds.

It happens when the engine's on, irrespective of which gear (or neutral) it's in and occurs both when stationary or moving. It doesn't change in pitch, volume or rate when in motion.

Any ideas what this is likely to be? My first guess would be something related to the power steering, but that really is a guess.

All help appreciated.

Is the alternator drive belt in good condition and set correctly and the power steering fluid at the proper level?

Thanks for your response. The belt looks in very good condition, but whether it's set correctly, I don't know. Regarding the PS fluid; I'll have a look tonight.

Cheers

Update.

I had another look last night. I'm almost certain this noise is being generated by something at or near the top of the engine block.

Having removed the silver engine cover, if I place my hand on the remaining black plastic components (which I assume to be related to air intake) I feel a vibration or buzz at the same time I hear the noise. I don't feel this if I touch the engine block, but that may just be because it's a huge hunk of dense metal.

Is there a pump or other moving part around that area that's likely to cause these symptoms?

Cheers.

As already mentioned the alternator belt slipping could be the cause although normally it only does it when you first start from cold but if its very slack it could be doing it all the time.
