Ford Mondeo - Alternator failed, charging circuit - Onetap

I have a 1997 Mondeo estate that has been off the road for a couple of years. I'm planning to get it road worthy again, barring any expensive problems being found. It runs well and should be going again shortly.

The battery had been charged occasionally, but apparently not regularly enough. It was found to be flat and the car was jump-started but died on disconnecting the good battery. A new battery was obtained and the car starts easily and runs with this. However, the alternator warning light now comes on, but didn't previously. The alternator had been replaced in the past few years, the original having expired after 100,000+ miles; the replacement has probably done less than 10,000. Does anyone know if there's any component in the alternator or charging circuit that might have been cooked by trying to run the engine with a dud battery? I'd imagine it coukld be the voltage regulator and I,ll have to get a new alternator, unless someone can direct me towards some fuse or a similar cheaply repairable component. Thanks for any & all suggestions.

Check the alternator connections and also the belt tension.

If you disconnected the good jump battery and left the the engine running with the Alternator connected to a flat battery ...

You will blow the Alternator Diodes ...

The Alternator needs to sense a good battery ...

You will probably need a Rectifier Pack ( Rectifier & Diodes & Brushes) not difficult to fit with the Alternator removed ...

Motor Factors or Electrical Specialist can supply a Rectifier Pack ...

Yes. Thank you Peter & Scotmech. I've been browsing on other Ford forums (fora?) and these seems to indicate that the diode/recitier pack will probably be toast, so I am planning to pull the alternator out and if the windings seem sound, to get a replacement rectifier pack.

I do find it a profoundly strange design feature that the alternator is capable of delivering enough current to damage itself and that there is no fuse or circuit limiter or breaker to protect against this. If this had been caused by a wiring fault that was unlikely to occur during the life of the car, it would be acceptable, but a flat battery could arise from leaving internal lights on or a defective battery, both of which are quite likely at some point.

As far as I know all the regulating electronics are in the alternator, if the engine stopped when you disconnected the battery there was obviously no output from it so if all the connections are OK a new one will be needed.
