Not sure what tools you need, but the independent garage who did the front bearing on my 55-plate Mazda 6 said it was a pig of a job to do.
I've changed the rear wheel bearings on my previous Focus myself so when I told him I'd been looking into doing the front bearing on the 6 myself, the guy said there's no way I'd have managed it at home. I think he said something had seized and he'd had to apply heat - I'm afraid I can't remember exactly what the problem was.
IIRC, the bill included a couple of hour's labour.
