VW Golf Mk4 automatic - Starting problems - tarjack

When turning the ignition key on the first stage all lights on the dash board light up as normal. When turning the key fully to start there is a machine gun type noise and the engine does not start. What is it and Is there a salution?

Do the panel lights go dim or out when this happens? If so remove and clean the battery terminals, also check for a loose battery earth connection to the engine/gearbox - or it could just be a dud battery.

Many thanks Peter.N. have invested in a battery charger and motor starts well after a 3.5 hour charge will run out and fully charge now. Again many thanks.
