CORSA 17.D (W REG 2000) GEARBOX FAULT - TypeR
Car has done less than 30,000 miles and suddenly the gearbox had a heart attack as I moved off from a roundabout. I can no longer get the clutch into gear four. I have taken the car into a local mechanic who has advised me after doing some initial checks that the problem is within the gearbox itself. Told the cost will be £120 to strip the gearbox but this does not include any additional parts that may be required. Does this price sound reasonable to anyone here in the know? Also I was considering taking the vehicle into MrClutch as they specialise in clutches + gearboxes. Does anyone know much about MrClutch and what prices are like?

On a final point do you think perhaps I should contact Vauxhall as the car is under is only 2 ½ years old and has done under 30,000. As far as im aware the Vauxhall cars only have a one-year warranty and Im not sure if this applies to the gearbox.

Any help much appreciated.

If this is the Mr Clutch at Gateshead, yes they are cheap, I've used them before, but I wouldn't go back. If you wanna know why, I'm not gonna say it on here for the dreaded legal reasons, but you can e-mail me...

£120 to remove and strip the box? Bargain!! Don't forget it will cost another £120 to refit, plus a new clutch. You are not going to get much change out of £600..... MIGHT be something simple though like a broken gear linkage.

I doubt you will get any joy at Vauxhall, but worth a try - IF it has a full main dealer history. You MIGHT get 25%, if you're lucky. If you have had it serviced away from Vauxhall, forget it.

Thanks for your prompt replies everyone

I have already had a local Back-Street mechanic take a detailed look for me. He took out the battery and battery bracket. I think you can get to look at some of the external linkages or whatever these bits are called by doing this. He has told me that the problem is definitely within the gearbox but he cannot say for sure what it is. He does not think I will require a new gearbox but in order to fix the problem he now has to strip it, this being the only way forward.

I asked him what the cost of this would be and he said £120 but any parts I have to get or if I have to send it away that would cost more. You could also go for a second hand gearbox so he seems to have money-saving ideas. To the best of my knowledge this cost involved taking it apart and putting it back together but I will check this in the morning when I drop my car in. One poster has said £120 is a good price and I guess anything to do with clutch/gearbox is generally quite expensive.

Also with regards to Vauxhall themselves I have been in contact with the customer services. I must say they seem very professional and did return e-mail sent promptly. Basically they told me that its outside of warranty but they might consider good will depending on what was discovered by the dealership.

Only thing about taking it to Vauxhall is my fear of getting taken to the cleaners in terms of the price. A lot of these garages are not making much money on the showroom front so they are just using the garage to pay the bills.

A Vauxhall garage in the North London ripped MY dad off very bad. The garage in question went bust a few months later.

Update got a reply from Mr Clutch website about price of new gearbox. Fair play they replied by e-mail and gave a quote from their website.

Copy of e-mail below opinions on that price sounds a bit on the steep side to me but I don’t know much about gearboxes

Dear Mr Reynolds

Thank you for your speedy reply. I have contacted our Gearbox Department and they have given a price of £609.23 for a F15 5-Speed engine for the gearbox to be supplied and fitted, this also includes VAT.
Thank you once again for contacting CI Holdings Ltd.
Yours sincerely
