HI,

Recently i replaced the steering pump in my mondeo, It was leaking fluid, However i drove it for about two months topping up the fluid occasionally befor ei replaced it.

After i replaced the pump it worked ok for 2-3 weeks,

Now every now and then the steering gets heavy for a while, after a bit it frees up and works as normal.

I took it to my local mechanic and surprise surprise it was ok when he drove it. He thinks the rack and steering column may need to be replaced.

Would I have damaged the rack and steering coulmn by driving the car with a leaking steering pump? What would be causing these intermittent steering problems. Sometime the steering is very heavy and it is very hard to turn the steering wheel?

Any ideas suggestions?

Check the tension on the pump drive belt.

Thanks ill check that.

Would the rack and column be affecting this at all so?

The power steering racks on the Mondeo 2000-2007 are prone to failure, as a power steering company we see lots of them and usually the failure of the rack is intermittent to begin with and can eventually become permanent.

I am assuming that the pump you have used is good as these pumps are also prone to problems.

If you change the rack make sure you get a reconditioned one with a long warranty, all of the units we sell come with a 2 year warranty.
