Thought i'd kick off part three of our journey around HJ member's travels searching for any car (or any type of vehicle) which has been new, unusual, surprising in any way. I'll kick this one off as this morning i was at a roundabout behind an old Oldsmobile Cutlass in red with a white roof. Must be one of very very very few in the UK surely.

Skyline in matt black. Oh well, I suppose it saves on polish!
|
|
Must also mention couple of weeks ago as i came out of a shop, there was the hefty noise of a very loud engine, turned round to see this massive Chevrolet Tahoe, presumably the 6.2 V8, in black, blacked out windows. There are a few American motors knocking about round here.

resurrection ?
How about in my high street in NW London , Rolls Royce Phantom, current shape - with Russian number plates ?
and how do you track such a car in the event of a prang ... ?

I think some tall Soviet bald heavies come round and tell you that you didnt see what you thought you saw.

A few days ago I saw a 'monster truck' on a main road in Somerset. Not just a lifted pick-up on bigger wheels, but a pick-up body perched on a specially built chassis, with tractor sized wheels. From the noise, it had a V8 engine, which one would expect. It was doing about 30 mph with a queue of cars behind it.
It wasn't as extreme a monster truck as the ones they have at shows but it looked pretty unwieldy onthe road and took up the whole of its side of the road.
The monster truck must be one of the silliest and most pointless of automotive inventions!

Even more stupid than this?

Its a Hybrid you know. Won American Green Car Award too.

A guy in our village has bought an Alfa 8C in red, with black leather. Although I am not an Alfa fan, this does look the dogs gonads. The sound is fantastic and gives me goosebumps. God I am jealous. hate to think what he paid for it. New I think they were about £175K !!
|
I'd hate to think what he'll lose on it. Most Alfa's get sold second hand for around eleven pounds.
That said they didnt make many 8C's

That's £10 more than S-types sell for. ;)
|
Are you aware how it feels to be run over? :)
Im not worried about the S-Types residuals, its in the bracket of 'its fallen as far as it can fall' now.
|
Jamie, that's the best way to buy a car. Buy something which is perceived not to be as good as it is. Let some wealthy mug take the hit, so you win! :)
BTW I have a soft spot for Alfas having owned 3. Presently I have a Skoda and a Merc, the latter is rarer than an S-Type. :)

A Skoda and a Merc, not a combination i often see on someones driveway i must admit. Yes the Jag was bought because i wanted a big Jag since i was a kid and with fuel prices and green campaigners and the 'war on the motorist' gathering pace even more i thought to myself this might be my last chance to own one. So i got it. Yes next year i might end up with a Focus Diesel but at least i'll always be able to say 'i had a big Jaaaaaag'
Came across a Chrysler 300C last night. Its even bigger than it looks!

Saw a Lancia Beta Monte Carlo yesterday.
Amazed any have survived.

Isnt that the car which bankrupted Lancia's UK arm due to rust recalls?
|
jamie, I think you'll find Avant has a Skoda and a BMW.
I see an unusual car very day as I haven't seen a Merc like mine since I bought it. I'm thinking of starting a running report, but not sure how many people would be interested in a 15 year old car. Also, I'm planning a long term report for the Octavia. I've had it twice as long as any other car. As much as anything because it's a diesel, which I've run from 94,000 to 205,000 miles.
|
We'd certainly be interested, Trilogy: running reports of what a car is like in real ife are something that this forum could be useful for. You can also write your own reviews for the HJ site in general.
What sort of Merc is yours?
A Skoda and a Mercedes could easily be a good pair of cars, for example a Mercedes company car plus a Skoda 'family bus', or I could have had an SLK instead of the Z3 to go with the Octavia (for the price, three years ago, of an immaculate 7-year-old Z3 the SLKs available were older and more tired).
|
It's a W124 E300 Diesel, 7 seater, automatic estate. The car had 2 owners before I bought it in June, with 166,000 genuine miles. I've had a few things done and a few more next week. Today, the guy who it's going to next week has told me he knows of someone who would pay more for it than I did. I've wanted one for along time. It won over a Passat TDi, A6 TDi, 406 2.0HD and /Octavia TDi 1.9. So far it's an every day car but after the end of November could become a limited mileage one on classic insurance. The Octavia will be run during the winter and then I'll probably sell it. However, that scenario could change.
|
>>not sure how many people would be interested in a 15 year old car.
That's almost as old as my KIA Pride. ;>)
|
Im interested in a 15 year old car, but struggling to find a Mercedes Diesel interesting in any respect :)
|
My 2nd car is a 28 year old Datsun Bluebird estate (ie rwd & pre Sunderland) that I was given last year. It was unused /little used for very many years, is now recommissioned & in almost daily use. Only done about 40k, it went to Silverstone the other week (200 miles each way) which is OK for such an old car. Really useful being an estate car.
Not an exciting car in any way at all, but it gets lots of (admiring?) looks and (according to howmanyleft) is one of about 10 such estates left in UK.
|
jamie, one of the reasons I like it so much is because it's very difficult to tell it's a diesel. It's very smooth, nothing like gravelly modern diesels. It's not a turbo, but masses of torque makes for a very relaxed drive with a lazy feeling. It may appear to be large, but is easy to place on the road, with a tight turning circle.

Hello!!!! I have seen lots of unusual cars in Cyprus. There's a lot of Russians there and they like the big shiny prestige ones, like this shiny silver Bentley: www.flickr.com/photos/64127830@N03/6032678848/in/p...m
It's quite dusty in Cyprus, so it must be a pain to keep it clean.
I also spent a day off roading in a Landrover Defender (a proper one - absolute bare-bones inside). The speedo didn't work so the driver just guessed. I didn't get to have a go though. I must admit I did enjoy driving like a Cypriot for a bit :-))
|
Just saw a pale blue Toyota WiLL Vi on the A14 near Huntingdon.
|
Saw a Dodge Caliber today, which is notable because it means somebody bought one!
|
In carmarthen last week saw a Rover 75 vanden plas with the extended body and the final radiator grille as per the roewe 750. Would love one but brain says no, no, NO! (plus SWMBO would emasculate me with one of her surgical scalpels) so that's a no then.
|
Saying no to a rover 75 shows your woman has good sense.

Saying no to a rover 75 shows your woman has good sense.
What's wrong with it?
|
( I have already suffered with 2 rover 75's 1 a 1.8, 1 a 2.5, and an mgzt 160 + )
I'd love a 75 van den plas long wheeelbase, just don't want the mechanicals, as. my username might (or might not) suggest have many many years of experience, having worked in the dealerships, in parts dept. I still think it's a beautiful car, and SHE agrees too, but As time goes by... I also think the mg6 is one of the worst cars i have seen in modern times, but that is subjective.

A Ford Cortina 2000E in black. Couldn't see the reg so I don't know how old.
|
|
The Rover 75 was a good car in many ways (although the K-series engine wasn't one os them): the diesel and the V6 had many fans.
Personally I couldn't have lived with that dashboard: the combination of dark brown wood and sepia-faced instruments is reminiscent of a 1940s parlour - the 'front room' that never got used unless Great-Aunt Bertha came to stay, or there was a death in the family (or both).
|
In response to being asked whats wrong with the Rover 75, i say this.
- Its a Rover
- All the engines are pretty poor
- Badly made
- Falls apart much earlier than 3 Series and A4 it was meant to compete with
- If it was any good co-owners BMW wouldve shut it down, so obviously it wasnt
- Too small inside
- Too big outside
- Its a Rover
- Handles like a Yacht with a hole in the sail
- That clock!
- Uneconomical uninspiring tat
Lovely job. Thats that one sorted.
|
jamie, the one I drove 2 weeks ago with 154,000 on the clock hadn't fallen apart. I was most impressed but didn't like it. I thought I would. BTW it was a loan car.

They're not my style either Avant but it's entertaining to get the response from Jamie.

And Trilogy wins the Jamie award for the 'Exception that Proves the Rule' of the year.
|
Whoever designed the door handles never opened any of the doors. If this individual had done so the design would have been amended. The Alfa 156 handle should be given to the Rover designer for eternity.
|
The best thing which was ever given to a Rover designer was his P45
|
214/216 hatch was a superb design. . SD1 is an all time great. P6 and P5 both excellent, too. MG supercar was nicked by Honda to become the No-Sex!
|
|
What's wrong with the clock in Rover?! Providing it tells the time it should be ok!
|
|
|
There seems to be a lot of interest in door handles amongst Alfa fans. Is this the Italian red-blooded passion that we hear so much about? ;-)
|
All Alfa fans get very excited about the exterior of their car, with door handles and Dorito shaped grille. Note how they're never keen on admitting whats underneath the 'passion' is quite poor.
|

Well, you need to have an Italian attitude. The style and passion are all important - reliability and build quality are just adornments.
|
You buy an Alfa with your heart, a BMW/VW with your brain. The reliability of VWs and BMWs is no longer as good as some would have you believe.
The grille is no Dorito.
|
I was under the impression that Alfa reliability has pulled its socks up considerably in the past 5 or 6 years. Also they're beautiful. Doritos are nice as well.
|
|
Unfortunately you pay for a car with your wallet and not with fairydust so the BMW/VW would probably always win out.
But not just for that. The main reason i'd never buy an Alfa isnt the dodgy reputation or the iffy build quality, but actually the fact they're all very pig ugly and has been designed by a man blindfolded in a dark shed. They look awful, but looking awful gets dressed up as 'Art' these days so i suppose thats fine.
|
They look awful. jamie, I feeel sorry for you if you don't see the beauty of Alfas, 156, GTV 105 series, Giulietta 750 series, Giulia 101 series, 1900, Junior Zagato, Alfetta, Mto, 8C, Duetto Spider, Kamn tail spider, Giulietta/Giulia spider, GTC, Sud Sprint, Giulia sedan etc.
|
I'm with Trilogy on this one. They look 'well balanced' to me. Hard to describe. The lines are just pleasant to look at.
|
Ive googled all of those cars and the 8C isnt bad and the Mito looks nice bang side on and from the rear (the front is horrible) and apart from that theres nothing there i'd give a second glance to.

The trouble with Rovers was not the design but the implementation of same.
Alfas have always had the ability to delight and infuriate at the same time: maybe it's just that I'm getting old but I don't think I want that combination of qualities in a car. (The opposite sex provides it quite enough for most of us....).
The VAG cars I've had (five) have all been fun to drive but without the stupid excesses of the stylist that so many others suffer from. The current Octavia has, for example: a proper handbrake; no separate starter button; a spare wheel; somewhere to put my left foot with a footrest; proper door handles; and the ability to see out of the back when reversing.
Having all those in one car is, sadly, almost an 'unusual sighting' in the spirit of this thread.
|
I'd never buy an Octavia myself because its not my sort of car but i can fully respect anybodies decision to purchase one and if someone asked me for a simple effective reliable car to recommend, i'd put an Octavia on the list. I'd also point out its a Passat for a few quid less. I like a car which makes me smile when i get in it, my Jag does that, a Skoda wouldnt, even though i know as a car to drive its more than capable, but unlike an Alfa i doubt i'll have many instances where the Jag makes me angry. Not everybody is as into cars as some of us and some people just need a car which will 'do as it says on the tin' somewhat and thats fine, sensible pragmatic decisions always get my backing. And because an Alfa Romeo falls into none of these categories than i could get behind is why i specifically dont like them.
Rear visibility is an issue as ive been complaining about it for ages with so many new cars, you may aswell put van panels in and forget about the window in some of them, the new Fiesta is hopeless out of the rear. Some of the door pillars and B pillars in many new cars cover entire square postcodes in their blind spots, no wonder so many cyclists get run over. You know alot of you on here probably think the only type of car i like is big petrol powered luxo barges but thats not true, i love small cars. The new Ka for instance looks fantastic and for simple transport im sure its great fun, yes the interiors cheap but the car is cheap. The old Ka was a riot, specifically after the stoneage engine was dropped. The 1.25 Zetec Fiesta from the late 90s, still the best small car ever made, terrific thing. Renault Clio and Peugeot 206 were fun as well even if the latter had an awful interior. And i like hot hatches as well, i'd happily walk into any second hand dealership and buy a Focus ST tomorrow.
|
|
I trust Skoda pay up for these shameless plugs Avant! ;-)
Although I can't fault your justification-with the exception of:
proper door handles;
Have you see the plastic interior door handles on the base model octavia-horrid things!
The big red 'start button' has to be the most cheesy gesture. It once had a use when the starter was on its own circuit, but now it just sems like a childish affectation*.
* The Morris Minor (and other cars) have a starting switch on the bulkhead which is very useful when attempting to coax a recalcitrant engine into life and an assistant isn't available.
|
In the early days of motoring you used to have to stand in front of your car and wind it up to start it, and if the handbrake wasnt applied properly before hand you'd end up running yourself over with your own car. I'd prefer a red starter button to that!
My word we've come on leaps and bounds havent we.
|
jamie, as you well know, you really need to see cars in the flesh to appreciate them. For someone who has an S-Type you should be aware of this more than most. :)
btw you mention people not knowing what's underneath an Alfa, 'people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones'

Apart from the broken sat nav whats under the wonderful body is quite immense. I'll tell you what, come and meet me on a bit of straight road with your diesel Mercedes and i'll bring the Jag and we'll see which one reaches the other end first.
:)
By the way the Sat Nav thinks ive turned off the M6 now and am in Northamptonshire. Not sure how it managed that.
|
Indeed, often a Ford in disguise. :)
Racing on a public highway is extremely irresponsible, I expect you are very, very young.
BTW saw an Orion and a Cortina 2000E with a KEV numberplate
|
Im 27 and we will not be racing we will be driving very quickly for the purposes of discovering who gets to the other end the soonest.
|
Saw a couple of interesting things today. Nothing particularly odd but came across a Fiesta ST and strangely, SEVEN Rover 45's.
|
Damn you. I was just about to make a new one of these threads!
I saw a Chevy Captiva police car in Preston.
|
|
SEVEN Rover 45's.
I think you need to move to a different area.

SEVEN Rover 45's.
I think you need to move to a different area.
Seriously i saw a silver one at traffic lights, one parked at the side of the road, two in a car park, was behind one on the dual carriageway and a couple of others. Its bizarre!
Oh i also saw a CityRover, which proves somebody bought one.
|
Saw my first Leaf on the road today - well, it is autumn.
Styling looks pretty good, not weird nor bland. i walked past as it was parked, and the interior looked good quality and a decent place to be.
I don't think I'd be embarassed to be seen in one, and definitely didn't get the "Prius" attitude which affects many people when they see one of them
