With Autumn approaching I have been trying to get information of a supplier of winter tyres and steel wheels for my wifes Mazda 3. The normal wheels are alloys, however I would prefer to have the winter tyres on a set of steel wheels. If anyone can suggest where I could source these I would be pleased to hear.

Mytyres.co.uk do sets of winter tyres on steel wheels, you just need to enter your registration number and they will come up with the recommended wheel and tyre combination with prices. Alternatively, check the car handbook and type in the size yourself. You need to do a sense check on the recommendation, for instance it used to recommend 15" wheels for my car, but they won't fit over the brakes! But it gives you a starting point.

I've recently bought a set of winter tyres for our Golf, I used Mytyres and found them very good.

However, I wish I'd looked more closely at the Mytyres site and noticed, as MikeH points out, they do complete wheels.

I sourced a secondhand set of steels from e-bay @ £55, I had to collect 'em from 30 miles away, spend a couple of hours cleaning 'em up and I've had to pay my local tyre shop £10 per wheel to put the winter tyres on. So all in all they've cost me £340 plus 3 gallons of fuel plus about 8 hours of my time.

A set of new wheels with the same Good Year tyres fitted and delivered from Mytyres is showing at £370.

My wifes Mazda 3 has Uniroyal Rain experts fitted, which were good in the snow. We live in a rural area at the bottom of a hill that is not ploughed or gritted. Her car went up it fine with the new Uniroyals. Whilst they are not winter tyres. If you feel that you cant afford winters, then these are a good compromise. They are not available in my tyre size, so I purchased a new set of alloys and Pirelli Sottozero winters for mine.

If you plump for steel wheels rather than original Mazda type alloys, beware that you may also need the correct wheel nuts /bolts.

As other posters have stated, many european tyre e-tailers sell wheels and tyres ready to put on the car when the weather changes (yes there are several I know about, French & German).

Last year I purchased winter tyres and had my local tyre specialist fit them to the existing alloys (old tyres were worn so discarded), in March I purchased 4 summer tyres and put the winter tyres in storage. Last week I purchased a set of original alloys for my car, and will mount the winter tyres in the autumn when it is time to change over. I sourced the alloys on ebay, a breakers yard was selling them at a good price.

If looking for steel wheels I suggest contacting your dealer to see what price they will offer for a set of 4, get the part number and search the web too. Some dealers are set up to supply winter tyres & wheels, it depends.

depending on where in the uk you are we can help

however if you are not located near us, your local tyre depot/ arage should be able to help,
some companies have stared doing good deals for vredestein (extremely good winter tyre)
I think even costco do them as well
