Renault Modus - Car is driving me NUTS!!!! - dofbeer

Hi everyone, does anyone on here have a Renault Modus by any chance?

I'm having problems with my 05 dCi chewing alternator belts like they are going out of fashion, second one in less that a year. The last one was fitted Thursday (21/7) and its already started to shread on the right hand side of the belt, pulled a shreaded peice of belt off yesterday, about an inch's long.

What's really hurting my melon is all the pulleys are ok with no play as is the tensioner and when it was first fitted the belt looked to be tracking all the pulleys well with no obvious signs of jumping grooves? All the pulleys were checked and seemed ok with no sharp edges.....

Anyone help me out please....

Thanks

You are either buying duff belts or there is a problem with the pulleys there is no other reason for the fault to occur. You say there is not a problem with the pulleys but have you checked them under load at 4000rpm for which you need a rolling road I think maybe you will find an alternator clutch is failing.

Sounds like a classic case of misalignment, whoever is replacing the belts needs to look at how the components ie alternator, ps pump, air con comp etc. are mounted. Strobing the system may give a clue, showing a running belt climbing up a pulley wall.

Have you had any component changed that's driven by the belt. Alternator perhaps?

Hey chaps thanks for the info.

Firslty, how do I go about 'strobbing' the belt?

Secondly, what the Geoff is a Alternator Clutch, I've never worked on a car this young - last motor was on an old Vauxhall Corsa P reg.....

Just to add, nothing has been changed on the motor - just the two belts.

I can see this being an expensive repair.... joys of motoring I think they call it fella's...

Thanks..

To strobe a belt you need to paint or mark a white line - preferably in the centre of the belt - for about a metre in length - all round is best... Got to be dead straight.

Then apply a strobe (timing light)) to the belt at various places. and look for the white line travelling sideways. Best done in a darkened garage , or in eveing or bonnet partially shrouded so you can see better.. depends on the power of the strobe light.

If there is no deviation, the line should stay in the same place..

I agree with the above diagnostics.. Soemthing is either loose or worn and the pulleys rock under load.. You should see it happen if you rev the engine from idle as maximum load occurs on changes in speed.

I would guess crankshaft pulley, idler pulley or water pump... but any component can be at fault..

Modern alternators have a clutch to avoid stress and cut out excess driving speed.
