Nom de plume - origins? - Avant

Now that we've found out that the original Bobbin Threadbare was a hero from a computer game called Loom, would anyone else care to share with us the idea behind their nom de plume on this forum (or nom de clavier, strictly)? (No pressure if you'd rather keep it secret.)

Interestingly, Bobbin in the game was a chap, whereas his reincarnation is a charming young lady physicist from Preston.

Mine is very boring (well, I trained as a chartered accountant) - simply the model name of a much-loved Audi which I had when I joined the forum in 2004.

Nom de plume - origins? - unthrottled

I've never known you to start a thread! BTW 'unthrottled' and 'full throttle' are not synonomous. Although a pedant did point out that there should really be disambuguation between air and fuel throttling.

Are you 'aving a larf?

What, do you mean some people aren't using their real names? Crickey....

You any relation to Broccen Bach-Mountain?

Nom de plume - origins? - unthrottled

so what is Bobbin Threadbare then?

Now that's an existential question which only she can answer (although Jamie745 will try to).

Doesn't explaining a "nom de plume" rather defeat the whole object of using one?

Mine's the initials from Ruperts Trooper - which is classified.

All you need to know about me is in my name...

Nom de plume - origins? - veryoldbear

I am old round and furry. Nuff said.

Nom de plume - origins? - Slightlyfatdirector

Um. Mine is quite explanatory I think. Shame really. 'Athletic slim' as a precursor would be much better I think, but seems sadly unachievable. At least I am only 'slightly'

Nom de plume - origins? - ohsoslow

Came from the name of a very old and heavy clinker built sailing dinghy my brother and I had as kids. Every one else in the vicinity had lightweight Albacores, Fireballs etc which were in a completely different league. Seemed to suit a car forum as well as anything.

Nom de plume - origins? - turbo11

My nickname at Mclaren, due to my love of turbo petrol engines. Anyone who is anybody there has a nickname. Some are nice, and some are not ones the owner may like. The odd few are downright rude, but usually deserved and you need a thick skin to work in that enviroment.

Nom de plume - origins? - concrete

My Nom de Plume is Concrete. It would be humourous if it related to Managements Yorkshire Pudding but she is an excellent cook. Boringly, I work for a company that works exclusively with Concrete in the construction industry. I wish I was a Physicist though, very cool profession. Best to all. Concrete

You couldve called yourself The Cement Man to jazz it up a bit. Add a bit of vivaz etc

Nom de plume - origins? - bathtub tom

Mine's a (sort of) anagram of my real name.

Nom de plume - origins? - monian

I live Anglesey in North Wales and Welsh for the island is Mon (as in Ynys Mon) but strictly speaking where the 'o' has a little 'roof' ('to bach' cirumflex) over it.

Hence Monian

What exactly am I lacking in the charm department eh FocalPoint?

I was only 7 when LOOM came out but it's a great game.

I'm afraid also that I am a defector to Lancashire, being originally a Merseysider.

This is a good thread Avant - I've often wondered the logic behind some of the more funny/crazy noms de plume.

Yay! Bobbin's back! I feared that you'd eloped with Lucy BC to set up a accident management company.

"What exactly am I lacking in the charm department eh FocalPoint?"

Not having seen any of your charms, I couldn't possibly comment.

Is charm solely a visual attribute Focalpoint?

I should add that my nickname reflects my hobby of photography and that I am a precocious ten-year-old living near Mornington Crescent tube station.

But Merseyside is in Lancashire, originally.

Nom de plume - origins? - Bobbin Threadbare

I have lived in different bits of Merseyside and some of those definitely belonged to Cheshire (but I was born some years after the creation of Merseyside).

Fine and well having been given the all clear thank you for asking and yourself,

Collos comes from the German and is the name of a cycle shop in Radeberg (google collosradsport) it was also word used to call a Colonel in the DDR.

My nom de plume is out of date now.

I chose it when I was fed up driving a BMW "god's gift to motoring" 3-series.

Chopped it for an Audi, and what do you know....I like driving again!

Nom de plume - origins? - unthrottled

What didn't you like about the 3?

Edited by unthrottled on 13/07/2011 at 01:19

Nom de plume - origins? - jamie745

Maybe they had the same issue with a 3 series that i had with a Ford Focus. With all the motoring community and every journo, car tester and motoring media outlet telling you its the greatest car to have ever been built, you get it, and discover its exactly ordinary, it can become annoying.

Nom de plume - origins? - unthrottled

Very true. The focus is but a dim memory. It was completely unremarkable.

Nom de plume - origins? - jamie745

They banged on about "terrific driving feel" and how its "unrivalled in this sector" but all i found was a slightly overpriced, lowly equipped car with a poor ride and less power than an equivalent Peugeot.

Nom de plume - origins? - unthrottled

Every single one of them said the same! I can't really fault the car, any problems were very minor but it didn't live up to it's billing.

Nom de plume - origins? - jamie745

No i cant think of anything "wrong" with it as such. Its not like if someone asked me if they should buy one i'd go "dear god dont!" or anything. I'd sum it up by saying it did most things competantly, but did nothing outstandingly. And every rival gets picked it, like the Parkers/WhatCar etc reviews for the Peugeot 308 say "not as good to drive as a Focus" yet i was a passenger in one recently as a friend of mine took a test drive and it was an alright car! Its 1.6 was a nippy engine, better than Ford's 1.6, it was nicely finished, it didnt break your back on every bobble yet because its not a Focus apparently its s***. Oh well more benefit the rest of us, my friend looks likely to purchase one in the next week or so and with them being very cheap and some great deals because "focus is better" a better deal can be had.

Nom de plume - origins? - LikedDrivingOnce

What didn't I like about the 3 ... good question.

The engine, fuel economy and handling (in the dry) were very good of course. It is a very good car but it is irritating how the motroing press fawn over the 3-series and claim that it is streets ahead of the competition. I must admit that I liked it when I test drove it, but when the novelty wore off I started to see its faults. I'd never gone off a car that I'd owned before - quite the opposite, in fact. I get more attached to my cars.

The main things that I didn't like were:

the harsh ride (even on SE suspension), lack of support on standard seats, fidgetty steering, insane BMW indicator system, stingy standard equipment compared to rivals, some poor quality kit (e.g. stereo, trim), no hatchback option, bad handling in poor conditions, very high maintenance costs, "condition based servicing" was very inconvenient, and the numerous faults that developed on the car (worst of all being a blown turbo just out of warranty ....£3500!)
