Mitsubishi Shogun - Engine noise - JA101

Information or thoughts would be most welcome.

I have a 2005 Shogun 3.2 diesel with 32000 miles only on the clock. Apart from the usual diesel sound I am experiencing a lighter pitch noise/rattle. Only heard under a light load and not apparent when revving in neutral.

Does anyone know if this is normal for this engine as it is very similar to the diesel rattle, frequency etc. but it is puzzling it is only audible under load. Also mileage is low which tends to exclude certain more drastic issues, I hope!

Many thanks

Hmm-I would disagre with that.

What do you mean by a 'lighter' pitch. Pitch is frequency so it's high or low. I'm sorry but the descriptin is too woolly to indicate a specific problem.

Whats mileage got to do with it you could have a shot engine at any mileage. From the very poor description you have given I would say you have the startings of big end failure or maybe not.Engine noise under load other than normal combustion is normally caused by metal hitting metal which should not occur.

Has the noise been noticeable since shortly after this oil change? If so you could drain out what you have in there and purchase something good like a 5W40 fully synthetic from someone like Mobil, Millers, Fuchs, etc together with a genuine filter and see what it sounds like then.

I'll bore you for a few minutes, I had a similar experience with the Landcruiser i owned several years ago, i serviced it meself with a reputable make of oil commonly sold at accessory shops (still sold), about a thousand miles later it sounded like the ends were rumbling, a horrible expensive sounding clatter.

The excellent dealer (now gone more's the pity) at Collyweston then listened to it, the mechanic there built and overland rallied his own LC's so wasn't much he didn't know about them, he told me to drain out the rubbish (he used another term) that was in the sump and put some good stuff in...i did just that and that vehicle went on for many years sounding as sweet as the day it rolled off the line.

Higher than the normal diesel engine combustion noise although a similiar frequency.

You could also find it's something more minor...

When my car had a new alternator a couple of years back, it came back with a worrying metallic rattle from the engine bay. After a few minutes of head scratching by the mechanic he found the source of the problem... the top engine mount had broken, and under light loads gave a nasty metal-on-metal noise in time with the engine. €35 later job done...

Rattles are often benign-knocking noises are usually less so.
