Alfa Romeo Brera, BMW Z4 Coupe - Sports Coupes Recommendations - jexped

I'm looking for a sports coupe or similiar which is suitable for motorway driving (i.e. reasonably comfortable and quiet) yet also packs enough punch to excite on country roads. I'd particuarly like to get something a little different,

So far I've been looking at;

Alfa Romeo Brera - stunning looks, but most reviews comment on its weight and poor performance (unless you get the V6). I'd also struggle with the concept of paying for two useless seats in the back and worry about the reliability. Can anyone comment?

BMW Z4 coupe - Certainly more sporty than a quiet motorway cruiser I imagine? Looks amazing though. Any one had an experience with these?

RX8 - dont like the looks, TT - new shape often outside of budget

My budget is aournd 14k. Any ideas/ advice would be much appreciated, thanks

Ive been a passenger in a Z4 and all i remember from it was its boneshaking ride even on what feels in my Peugeot like a very smooth road.

Are back seats important? Because a Mercedes SLK should be attainable for that money if they're not.

If you want more of a four seater, comfortable cruiser then obviously a Mercedes CLK is an option. You can easily get a 5-6 year old one for 10k. The 270CDi is very highly rated. It may not be as fun round tight bends mind as it is a cruise mobile but it is a proper four seater. Might not fit the "be different" criteria though as it is a default surgeons car.

Something similair but a bit different could be the Volvo C70. Proper four seater, good equipment, nice looks, excellent metal folding roof. The T5 is powerful enough for most. Dont see many of them about.

If you were maybe willing to go for something with a bit of a rubbish badge you can get great value with the Peugeot 407 Coupe. Its absolutely massive, genuine four seater, nice Diesels but also a 3.0V6, very comfortable and like the Volvo you dont see many.

One like this for example.

Brera is a looker but is not a sports car (particularly not in country roads). If you want something to cruise around and feel good then go for it. Even the 'S' models tweaked by Prodrive would be left for dead by the other things in your list.

Other one to look at is a 350Z ?

Alternatively how about an SLK if you don't need 4 seats ?

I know people often recomend their own cars... but £14k of my money if you want a sporty drive? I could only recomend a Boxster, for which you could get the current shape, 05 or 06. Before you write it off due to practicality, look at one & check out the front & rear boots, you can get more in than you'd think. Untouchable drive at the price. ALternatively if you need rear seats, I'd be looking at:

BMW E46 M3

BMW E90 coupe

Merc CLK

Audi A4 Convertable
