What are the best, reasonably priced tyres, for my Passat?

Depends if you're keeping the car for a while. On my old 1.9 PD130 Passat, the factory-fit Continental Sport Contacts lasted 32,000 on the front and 60K+ on the rear, and I drive quite briskly, using most of the performance available, most of the time.

The replacement Vredesteins for the front were cheaper than the Contis, but only lasted 20K miles. So the Contis were good value, although more expensive.

I've been impressed by the all-round performance of the Kumho Ecsta Sports on my current Mondeo, which I reckon will last around 20K on the front.

The factory-fit Michelins lasted about the same, and I can't tell any difference between the Michelin and Kumho sets, apart from the Kumhos were half the price.

Bit confused -- am I replying to Craig, or causing trouble in the Back Room???

All I wanted to say was "Thank you Craig.....never even heard of Kumho....but I'll try my dealer! Jonnor

By coincidence, I've just ordered two tyres for my Skoda Superb which is the same car. My car has 16" wheels (some Passats were on 15") sized at 205/55 16 91V.

I never buy cheap tyres and find Michelin and Continental to be the best - and also good value. I have never (and never will) forgiven Michelin for introducing metric wheel sizes as a form of trade protection.

The best deal I could find was "Tyre Shopper" which is an online division of National Tyre. Order online and have them fitted at your nearest outlet. The price for two tyres of this size was £76.70 each - for the complete job.

I've used them several times before with no problems whatever - but I never ever take a car to a tyre shop, only loose (steel) wheels. These are almost monkey-proof.

Petrol or diesel? I ask because I think it may make a difference. My 2.0 tdi has 215/55/16/wr (extra load) tyres and I've currently got Pirelli P7s all round and I've been really pleased with them. I have just today arrange to have the fronts replaced (with P7s) on Friday, though this is at £150 per tyre. They are quieter and much longer-lasting than the OE Dunlops.

The South Koreans make some crackng tyres these days, Kumho and the like which are within 5% as good as anything for perhaps 1/2 to 2/3s the price. Top-end tyres are a waste of money, 30 years ago they were twice as good now you're talking marginal differences.

Based on what data?

Based on the majority of tyre tests I've read for years. Indeed in one article, the most expensive tyre on test, the Michelin Primacy, came last, Michelin's excuse was it was about to be replaced with a new model showing that mid-range tyres are as good as recent premium tyres. Good enough is good enough - why pay double?

The OE Pirelli P6000s on my Jag XJ8 were awful, noisy, slippy in the wet and wore out fast, I replaced them with Kumhos (KH11s if I remember rightly) a far better tyre in every respect and half the price. The OE Pirelli PZeros on my Jag XJR were excellent - you see, brand names alone aren't everything. I run cheap rubbish Chinese tyres the moment and they are fine - indeed I recently towed an Audi-driving colleague on his premium tyres out of a muddy car park the cheapo all-season Nankangs doing what they say on the tin - adequate grip in ALL conditions. I'm sure Mr Audi's tyres would have been great for whizzing round the Nurburgring and would have won many column inches of praise for doing so - but I live in the real world which is where most of us drive.

I just got some Falken 912s on my A4, these are one of the most outstanding tyres I have come across lately, and were heaps cheaper than Contis or Michelins etc.

This really does depend on the size.

This is because some model of tyre will be available in some sizes but not others. For example the Michelin Exalto is available in 15" and not 16" at the moment.

One of the best tyre for this particular vehicle is a Uniroyal as they are great value for money.

However just like any product you get what you pay for so the better brands such as bridgestone and michelin really do offer great performance.

Had Michelin Pilot Primacy HP as OE on my Skoda Octavia. 225/45-17 Fronts were worn out at ~22k.

A good mileage for me and so I sought out Michelins again, albeit at a price.

Exact replacements were not available so got the newer Primacy HP as the nearest. Seem to be wearing much faster and if so will be returning to a cheaper brand.
