Peugeot 207 VTI Support - Advice needed on Peugeout 207 VTI Sport - Tel The Nipper

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the board but I hope you can help me with some advice. I was looking for a newish car to replace my old R reg escort. I was driving by Rob Day in Chiswick on Friday and saw 2010 1.4 VTi Sport on their forecourt which looks nice for £9500 it's done 5845 miles only. So went home got the wife and we had a look at it. The salesman was very helpful and when I got inside I was very impressed with the interior and all the gadgets (compared to my Escort the gadgets are out of this world). Was told by the salesman that it belonged to a girl who works in Admin and is registered to Robin Day. As it only has 5845 miles on the clock I didn't think that I need to take it for a test drive!!! Managed to get the price down to 9181 (with £100 p/x on my old Escort. I was so impressed we put down a deposit of £500, to pay the balance when I pick the car up (cash sale). But it won't be ready for collection for two week (a bit rash I now know). Over the weekend I been surfing the net and seen loads of post on various sites about problems with Peugeot 207 and horror stories about reliability (especially the de-pollution problem) as well as the appalling after sales service that Peugeot provide. I am now feeling very anxious about my purchase and am thinking of cancelling the sale and getting a Fiesta Titanium (which seems a lot more reliable)

What I need to know, if I cancel the sale will I be entitled to my £500 deposit back or have I lost that? Do you think the price that was agreed was a good one or should I have haggled more and get a bigger discount? In your experience is the 207 a nightmare to own as the amount of posts on the net suggest? Do you think the Fiesta is a better car that the Peugeot 207

Any feed back would be greatly appreciated before I make the biggest and most costly mistake of my life.

Thanks in advance

Terry

Not all 207s are a nightmare. Honest John's appraisal (see under Reviews on this site) is quite complimentary - indeed he says "Quality has proved to be vastly better than previous 206. Range recommended".

The car still has 2 years' warranty left, and if it was owned by the dealer should have had any problems put right. But you should of course test drive any car you propose buying, not just for its condition but to see whether you like it or not.

After-sales service is provided by the dealer, not by Peugeot, and varies according to the dealer. Family-owned dealers are better than large chains.

As for your deposit, the dealer doesn't have to return it if you change your mind, but may do so for the sake of goodwill. You could ask about this, and if you're lucky you should test drive a Fiesta and a 207, and perhaps a few others. Finally you'll get a few hundred pounds more for your Escort if you sell it privately.

I agree with Avant. Sadly most cars are great but its the dealers and lack of, iether customer service or vehicle knowledge that lets a vehicle down. Sadly a lot of dealers are next to useless and often the small family dealerships are best as they have to go that extra mile to survive.

I have owned a 2008 207 1.4 HDI S A/C from new, covering 52k miles in just under 3 years. For a small car it is surprisingly roomy up front and more than capable on the motorway. 0-60mph on paper is a bit shocking, but it performs surprisingly well on my daily 75 mile commute.

Other than a fault with the EGR valve which was fixed swiftly under warranty, I have had just routine servicing and consumables. No real problems encountered with aftersales service either, I bought via an online broker and have had it serviced at two dealers, one near work and the other near my home. Both reasonably priced for main dealers and good service provided.

I have enjoyed it so much, that I part-ex'd it last week for a new 11 plate 207 1.4 Hdi Envy. Have you tried getting some quotes off online brokers ? I found the savings on nearly new were very close to what was being offered by the online brokers.

Robins & Day are Peugeot Motor Company's retail arm so you should be ok with them. Why not try the Fiesta ? It is a good car and no doubt offers a more exciting driving experience. I found a reluctance to negotiate. I do not think the dealer will refund your deposit but they may do for goodwill.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks guys for all the advice I really appreciate it. I guess I was getting cold feet after all the all issues I was reading about on the internet regarding the reliability problems people are having with their 207s. I know I was from the planet stupid for not taking the car a test drive, but I've never been in a position to buy a nearly new car, I though as it had under 6,000 miles on it, it would be O.K. I will phone the dealer tomorrow regarding arranging a test drive.

Someone has told me for the price I'm paid for this 1 year 1.4 VTI Sport are could get a new one for roughly the same price and that I should be able to haggle 30-35% of the list price. The list price for a brand new one is £13,795. Do you think it's possible to haggle 30-35% of the new price? It just seems like a lot to take off a brand new car.

Any thought would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

It is a lot but it's been known if the model isn't in great demand.

Have a look at a broker like www.drivethedeal.com and see what discount you can get. Then try asking if the dealer can match it on a new 207. You won't have a problem with your deposit if the dealer can sell you a new car instead of the year-old one.

I'd second Avant's suggestion. My first 207 came via drivethedeal from a Robins & Day dealership.

My new 207, I got a local dealer to match the dtd price. I paid just under £10,900 for a new 1.4 Hdi Envy 3 Door (With metallic). The list price was around £13,700, so a good saving on list and cheaper than some nearly new ones on the dealers forecourt.

I'd third Avant's suggestion. If you've any doubts, see what the dealer has in the way of trade ins non Peugot wise to avoid losing your deposit? I always find that they seem to go for a lower price than the same model at that marques franchise. Must have full history though.

Good luck. Regards, cc

New 3 door 1.4VTi Sport from driverthedeal.com - £10,500.

Don't think the 1.4 petrol engine has any big issues - is normally reserved for diesel engines that pootle around too much.

It's always best to get the lowest possible price but it's rare to manage it (like trying to buy shares at the bottom and sell at the top).

The internet is full of horror for pretty much any car (except for Subaru Foresters...)

**EDIT**- put in correct model as per the OP
